: HKS Axle-Back Exhaust Legamax Premium Review
saulbyu 05-02-2008, 08:50 PM Awesome :godance:
I just got it yesterday and installed it yesterday. It took about 30 minutes to install it, the hardest part was getting the rubber things holding the stock exhaust out.
If you're looking for weight savings, this is not the right exhaust for you. It's heavy! I would say it's as heavy as the stock exhaust.
If you're looking for sound, quite, and looks this is the exhaust for you.
Sound 10/10.
You can't even tell the difference from stock, when it comes to how loud it is. You can, however, hear the difference. It has a very nice deeeep sound. Driving you can’t even tell you have an aftermarket exhaust. This is not your Coffee-can loud Civic exhaust! That’s not to say that it doesn’t sound nice, it sounds very nice and classy.
Performance 9/10.
Before the exhaust I noticed the car didn’t like it too much when I took it over 5K RPMs, now it loves it! You can definitely feel the difference. The RPMs go up really fast when you step on it now, I got it to redline by accident due to how fast the RPMs go up now. The only think that could improve is the size of the pipe. It’s only 2 1/5” but I’m sure HKS knows what they’re doing since they have a great reputation as a JDM company.
Installation 10/10.
The only problem I had was with the Rubber holders from the stock exhaust. They are a bitch to get off! I found out that sticking a screw driver and pulling did the trick. Overall is extremely easy. I did it myself with no instructions. It does come with instructions, but they’re in Japanese. The only advise I have is be careful with the stock heat shield. It’s sharp and I cut myself trying to remove the stock muffler.
Looks 10/10:
The tips are awesome! They have that burnt tip and the tips are huge in diameter. Besides, you don’t see the burn crap under the exhaust like you normally would with the stock exhaust.
Price 5/10:
This thing is expensive for being an Axle-Back exhaust. $800 for a muffler reminds me that I’m a little obsessive. I will, however, buy the mid-pipe as soon as it becomes available to complete the system, only the best for my car :hump:
Fitment 10/10:
The fitment reminds me why HKS products are not cheap. It fits like a glove, you can’t mess it up. It almost aligns itself. You will not have any crocked pipes with this exhaust.
All-in-all this is the exhaust for you if price is not a constrain and you want a deep close-to-stock sounding exhaust that still delivers performance is easy to install and looks amazing!

Big to me, but not really that big. 110mm or 4.3".
TriStateEvo 05-03-2008, 05:38 AM Congratulations. I have mine coming in with the bumper heat shields.
MooseX 05-03-2008, 06:05 AM purty. Your right about HKS and fitment. Too bad you don't get the whole cat back for 800 bones..damn that's one expensive muff'. I'd love to have it.
I put this in the category of super bling along with the carbon fibre intake posted some time back. Super bling as in show car
DaemonSadi 05-03-2008, 03:48 PM Congratulations. I have mine coming in with the bumper heat shields.
Woooooow..... that was quicker then I thought it would be. You already gave up on leaving her stock? hahahahaha
Tvall13 05-03-2008, 11:16 PM I love the way it looks. I've been wanting someone to get this so I can hear how it sounds. HKS ftw!
JoeyMR 05-03-2008, 11:45 PM congrats, it flows well with the rear of the car
saulbyu 05-04-2008, 03:12 AM Here's some sound clips. It's Stock Vs. HKS on both sound clips. You will first hear the stock sound and then the HKS sound. Let me know if there are any questions.

Make Youtube clips man! Your clips are very confusing!
MooseX 05-05-2008, 04:55 PM ^+1 to that. A real world clip outside in the open air where there is no echo and background noise.
on2it 05-08-2008, 06:38 AM thanks for the review!
ddawg1130 05-08-2008, 07:03 AM awesome sound clip man. Thanks! don't listen to them, what do you need youtube to listen to exhaust? Unless we, as a human race, have developed the ability to see sound? if so then someone include me in on this awesomeness.
dcasandman 05-08-2008, 01:09 PM Was this done in the garage? It sounds good, but even the stock sounds different than mine. Sounds like a lot of sound bouncing off walls going on. I would like to here outside going down the street. I dont need Youtube clips, but I do like hear going away from me down the street since that is something you hear every day. The exhaust does sound sick though, and the price doesnt seem to bad. All the quality exhaust cost about 800 dollars from what Ive been seeing online.

The problem is that I used a high quality digital sound recorder and it picked up all, and I mean all, the noise around the car. It was done outside of my garage and the kid you hear on the background lives across the street! I’ll try to get some better sound clips of the HKS exhaust and also some clips driving by. As for the before, nothing I can’t do. The OEM exhaust is not going back on even if someone pays me money!
dcasandman 05-08-2008, 09:59 PM Dam that thing picks up every little sound if that little kid was across the street sweet. Still like the sound though. Can you feel any difference in the butt dyno, and are there any plans to put the car on the dyno? I'm trying to make a decision myself between the the HKS and Buschar. I like the Buschar sound, but I know HKS is top quality.

Yes I can fell the difference in the butt dyno. Not just that, when the car is stock and you step on it you can feel the RPMs slowly go up when you pass 4K. With the exhaust I noticed that if you step on it the rpms go up all the way to 7K and the RPMs don’t slow down as much when you pass 4K. It almost feels as if the car likes it when you step on it.
I don’t know how this exhaust compares to the Bushur exhaust when it comes to performance, but all I can say is it looks awesome and it sounds great. You can barely notice it at low speeds. At high speeds you can hear the deep tone, but it doesn’t drone. All I have to say is MY WIFE LIKES IT and she doesn’t notice the sound so it was a great choice for me.
R0ME0 05-22-2008, 05:32 PM Can you make a vid of the exahust clip? Additionally does it say HKS anywhere on that exahust? I don't see it on the tips!
RXH8ME 05-24-2008, 01:35 AM Sounds sick, get some drive by clips
Boostd4 05-27-2008, 05:44 PM Bit of a shame its only the muffler. Can't figure out why HKS would release it only as an axle back system...
Looks great though!
RXH8ME 05-27-2008, 09:01 PM the car looks sick bro...exhaust sounds good...love the tips..kinda expensive for just a muffler..but its your money...ill probably go with the same muffler in the future
dcasandman 05-27-2008, 09:07 PM If they had a mid pipe it would already be on my car. HKS website says it is in developement. I found this on another website for 652 also which really makes it pretty good price. with mid pipe it will be another 200 dollars I bet so it will be same cost as buschur one
the boat 05-29-2008, 01:58 AM why spend 800 on a muffler? You could probably get a harman motive turbo back race exhaust for that price with high flow cat!!!

I found the muffler for 652 on another website. I havent seen a mid pipe for over 200 dollars so it will be same price as the buschur with super quality being hks

still, it seems like a restrictive muffler!
dcasandman 05-29-2008, 03:21 AM still, it seems like a restrictive muffler!
Why do u think it is restrictive. 5hp is about all u get from a muffler of anykind. downpipe and mid pipe is where most hp gain is seen
the boat 05-29-2008, 03:34 AM where did you see the down pipe and mid section?
TriStateEvo 05-29-2008, 03:42 AM Japan has the centerpipe already from HKS. Just a matter of time.

U took the words right out of my mouth
TriStateEvo 05-29-2008, 07:28 AM I tell you, I love my HKS Legamax exhaust. My other Evo has an exhaust that could wake the dead so this one is a very pleasant change of pace for me. I think when choosing an exhaust, you really need to think about what the end use of your car will ultimately be. I see so many new Evo owners (both CT9A and CZ4A) complain about getting pulled over because of the noise level of their cars with aftermarket exhaust systems. The HKS Legamax only raises the noise level a few decibels, but the change in tone is what I like the most. It doesn't sound like a wisp of air coming out anymore, but rather a more deep and throaty sound, but nothing obnoxious. According to the HKS Japan website, the center pipe add on piece will only raise the sound another 3 or 4 decibels, which I can definitely live with. The center pipe is high on my list of things to get installed. From there I will worry about the mid-pipe/cat and the down pipe, but I love the way the car drives right now and the twin burnt titanium tips are just so pimp compared to the dual ovals on the stock exhaust.

I think that is an understatement... >.>

*cough* It's just a muffler that doesn't count *cough*
You just can't help yourself. :P

Sorry for sounding stupid but I thought the center pipe and mid pipe where the same thing. So once this is out it still wont be a cat back system. That does kinda suck. Guess ill be waiting awhile to get it all at once.

is300 06-03-2008, 07:46 PM nice review, if only they have a regular color tip as option
DaemonSadi 06-03-2008, 08:01 PM Sorry for sounding stupid but I thought the center pipe and mid pipe where the same thing. So once this is out it still wont be a cat back system.
With the center pipe it will be a catback. A mid-pipe is a replacement for a cat or hi-flow cat. So a Cat-Back would be everything AFTER the cat. And then the Mid-Pipe replaces the cat and the down-pipe comes down from the turbo.

There will be an increase in HP from center pipe also shouldnt there be? My last car I put entire system on the car and didnt get good hp gains until I had new high flow cat with downpipe, but from what Ive seen downpipes havent made much difference on the EVOS and have acutaully lost power with multiple downpipes
thegame 06-03-2008, 09:43 PM I don't know if it was already discussed, but isn't this exhaust only 60mm? That's less than 2.5'' It's very hard to tell by the pics with the ruler.
the boat 06-03-2008, 11:40 PM is t5hat worth $800?
dcasandman 06-03-2008, 11:45 PM is t5hat worth $800?
You can get it for 652 not 800
the boat 06-03-2008, 11:57 PM still, that is as much as greddy or AMS cat back!!! I'd rather have that!!!
DaemonSadi 06-04-2008, 04:44 AM There will be an increase in HP from center pipe also shouldnt there be? Yes. With the center pipe you will be seeing gains equal to other cat-backs on the market. The Muffler section isn't going to do much but sound, but with the middle pipe it will make gains and more so when you get a mid-pipe/hi-flow
LVSBB6 11-01-2008, 05:41 PM great review! now that you have driven with the HKS for a while, how do you like it now? im in the market of quiet exhaust and am thinking about this one, but worry of the restriction due to smaller piping.
Thanks!
is300 11-02-2008, 05:48 AM If you are looking for quiet this is the exhaust for you, had mine for about 2week now and the wife havent notice it yet:rock:
LVSBB6 11-02-2008, 08:49 AM how do you like the performance, if any?
is300 11-02-2008, 10:08 AM so far so good, I know your are looking to get a full 3in, but since I all I am looking to get is around the 350whp(on Dyno Dynamic) the HKS is good enough for me and i will be getting retune in 2 weeks with a full TB with 02 and IC upper and lower pipe
Sorry for thread revival but I'm currently about to buy the HKS Hi-Power catback exhaust and have seen some pretty positive reviews of just the axle back. Whilst the price difference isn't much, I suspect shipping price difference will be (since shipping for the dual exhaust is $300usd+ from Japan; or $600 from the States!).
Any thoughts on whether I should save the cash and get the Legamax or should I stay set on my Hi-Po?
sohcpunk 10-18-2010, 08:13 PM Why don't you just buy a used Legamax on the forum. A bunch of people are dumping these exhaust for cheap I've seen it as low as 500 shipped up to 700 shipped.

Yeah I sold mine for $400.
MR.SScott 10-19-2010, 04:50 PM Price 5/10:
This thing is expensive for being an Axle-Back exhaust. $800 for a muffler reminds me that I’m a little obsessive. I will, however, buy the mid-pipe as soon as it becomes available to complete the system, only the best for my car :hump:
Just because it's expensive does not mean it's the best.
Mad tyte JDM yo!
jkc213 10-19-2010, 05:48 PM I have this exhaust and happy with it... Quiet inside and out..

Difficult to find people willing to go to the trouble of shipping to Sydney Australia :)
Anyway, Adam from MAPerformance was able to get me the HKS Hi Power catback exhaust shipped to Sydney for a very good price (it's not much more than the top of the price range you mentioned)
