I bought mobil 1 synthetic gear oil (75W-90) and the service manual says 75W-80. Can I still run what I bought, it says it is API GL-5 quality.

Use what your manual or performance shop recommends.

Yes you can use that.

Not sure about Evos but I ran Redline MTF-90 synthetic in my turbo 07 Si. It made a huge improvement with shifting. Would that work on the X?

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-140 is a premium performance, synthetic, multi-purpose, automotive gear lubricant designed to meet the highest level performance requirements of many modern passenger vehicles in all types of operating conditions including limited slip applications, as well as deliver outstanding power transfer performance. Compared to conventional hypoid gear lubricants, Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-140 performs exceptionally over a wide range of temperatures.

While it will work, I'd personally suggest using something people have tried and reported on, at least in terms of "smoothness". Both AMSOIL and the Redline mix/cocktail have a lot of reviews.

Personally, I run the Redline cocktail and like it.

To me, the Mobil 1 is something you'd purchase for a car you don't really give a damn about. The biggest weak point of our transmission is how unsmooth the shifts are; doing the research on what oils change the feel of the transmission, to me, is a worthwhile endeavor.

Also, oil yourself and take pictures.

Yes you can use that.
NO he can not! The transmission calls for a GL-3/4 fluid, not a GL-5. Using a GL-5 can destroy the synchros. GL-5 is what we put in the transfer case and rear differential...or a Subaru transmission.

Oh.

Well, then don't use it.

Yeah, I just Googled a bit, and it does look like GL-3 and GL-4 for transmission, GL-5 for differential.

So, yeah, don't use it.

Redline MT-90 is good if you want something with that weight..
I personally use the Redline MTL (70w80). I like the feel of shifts better than stock. I'll probably go with the "Redline Cocktail" next to see how that feels..

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended

You're not using it in a rear axle. You're using it in a transmission, right?

Google around a bit. Every reference of "Mobil 1 Evo" I found basically said "It's for differentials and transfer cases", and the end result by the end of the thread is "oh, okay, I'll try Redline/AMSOIL/Diaqueen instead".

I guess he never technically said, but I'm assuming he was talking about tranny. If not, and he's talking about the differential? Then yeah, it'd be fine.

i want to change the manual transmission fluid....i think i will just get the Diaqueen just to play it safe.

Also found this regarding this mobil 1 - I am going to return it tomorrow
Not recommended for automatic, manual or semiautomatic transmissions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluids are recommended
