: Cleaning My BBS Rims
Joker0720 01-31-2011, 08:23 PM Hey guys. I have a 2010 Lancer Evo MR, and I'm wondering what the best method to clean my rims are. I've heard a lot of wheel cleaners can damage the Brembo's paint. I'd much rather not have to paint my Brembo brakes later on. I also dont know if the BBS rims are 'sealed' or not, and I hear polishing 'sealed' rims can damage the seal. I dont even know what that means.
What I used to use on my chrome rims on my truck, was use dish soap and a soft brush. But those were 5 spoke, the BBS are a bit more tight spaced and many more spokes. So that method would take me quite a bit of time, and with it being so dang-gone cold outside, with a foot of snow, I'd rather spend less time out there. So I thought about purchasing one of the polishing drill attachments, but just using dish soap and water, instead of polish.
What methods/products do you guys use?
Thanks!

Joker0720 01-31-2011, 08:48 PM Sorry, I'm a thread noob... Can you link me to one of them? I didn't see any on my quick look through.
ak47m203 01-31-2011, 09:04 PM no special thing for this, anything that can cut grease even dish soap.
on2it 01-31-2011, 10:51 PM I'm lazy, I use mothers FX Wheel & Tire Cleaner (make sure you clean it off your rotors - or avoid spraying on there), then break out a small tooth brush and scrub whatever s left off and rinse all off with water.

This.
Or, just use any mild wheel soap and water. I have a nice microfiber brush that fits perfectly between the spokes and between the front rotor and the wheel. Always comes out nice and clean.

yeah that too.... It may be cheaper that way, but way less entertaining....

With any luck, I'll be joining HotDog for some southern Ohio meets this year..... then you can meet us both..... and maybe punch one of us in the face....
CU2MIKE 02-01-2011, 02:54 AM Go to autogeek.net, look up EZ detail brush mini, p21s wheel gel cleaner or sonax full effect cleaner.

I've met Matt. I couldn't punch him, he's too spunky and adorable.
EvoXKid 02-01-2011, 04:40 PM Okay, i understand the whole get a tooth brush, get a hooker, get a polish brush, but from what the OP mentioned is its snowing and its cold. What i want to know, is livin in southern cali, cold is like 60 out during the day maybe 50 but thats really rare lol. I am just lazy, i dont want to take longer cleaning my rims than cleaning the car. Ive tried numerous spray on let sit and rinse off to remove the break dust. NOTHING WORKS!! does anyone have any products that spray on and rinse off that actually work? i hate having clean rims and then the inside lip is covered in break dust because i cant reash behind the rotor or having spots that look dirty because i cant reach them. I want an easy spray and rinse application to save time an effort. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
HP10T 02-01-2011, 04:54 PM Don't use anything super harsh or it'll pull the clear coat right off. I used to use this Michelin wheel cleaner stuff which had no harsh chemicals super environmentally friend and worked amazing but can't find it anywhere :(

Heh, so would the rest of us, but spray/rinse only works in television commercials. Really, check out the other wheels cleaning threads. Good luck.
Spray on hose off stuff won't work. You have to get down and use your hands to wipe the spokes and in between. It is a pain with all the BBS's small spokes but no way around it.
Yxd68 02-01-2011, 05:29 PM That's why I didn't get a GSR - the wheels are much more difficult and time consuming to clean.
The painted BBS MR wheels are a breeze to clean. Spray on some cleaner, use a fiber brush to move the stuff around, rinse, repeat (if needed), dry. Takes more work to clean the tires.
Maybe three minutes per wheel and tire when it's on the car.
Joker0720 02-02-2011, 06:33 PM After reading all this, and going on several other forums, I've decided that I'll stick to my dish soap and small brush method. It seems as though so many of the 'wheel cleaners' use chemicals that can destroy the Brembo's paint, or dmg the rotors. I'd much rather spend more time with regular, non-damaging dish soap, than damage everything. I dont care for the spray and rinse stuff either.
Perhaps a mild car cleaner could be better... Ah well, we'll see :)
Thanks everyone.

Why would you use dish soap when there are products specifically formulated to remove dirt/grime from automotive surfaces? If you'd read the thread within an inch of this one, you would have come across a fairly good explanation of the process, a link to tutorials, tools, and chemicals, as well as a process for prepping the wheels, so severe cleaning would not be necessary. FWIW, if you use dish soap on prepped wheels, it will remove the bulk of the protection.
Evo Tengoku 02-02-2011, 06:59 PM +1 dont use dish soap...

I wanted that set of wheels!
BoostX 04-04-2011, 03:36 PM Edit
Manuelg1702 04-05-2011, 04:44 AM The way I do it is put some meguiars liquid soap in at bucket with water rag and brush. Spray wheels down with water and turtle wax wheel cleaner let it sit for a minute or so and use my brush and rag.
sy272004 04-19-2011, 05:43 PM after cleanning. do you see brake dust still on bottom of wheel spokes?
since wheels are gunmetal/silverish in color ifyou look at wheel standing up you gona see if there is baked on brake dust.
had to use ironx to remove that from my wheels. for some reason sonax didnt do much of a job
