: Anyone Have Plans For Upgrading the Interior Look?

I have not gotten my new EVO yet, but the one thing I noticed really lacked some attention to detail was the back seat, the inside door finishings, and the console area. I think the dash looks pretty clean with the nav system, I really like the front seats, and I personally really like the all the gauges.
I'm new to this kinda of stuff, but with the other evos did anyone come out with interior upgrades. I know that Ive seen stuff for it like carbon fiber for dashes, but I would love a 2 tone back seat that matched exterior of the car, a nice baseball stitched center console, and a better look of the interior of the doors.
I know there has to be something like this out there. My Volvo even has all kinds of interior stuff a person can get after market. (seats, door panels, floor mats, ETC). If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

I'm thinking of upgrading the interior a bit using a local shop (brighton MA). I'm thinking of reupholstering the seats in a two tone suede material, and replacing the door inserts with upgraded material + padding. As far as switching out to CF trim, not really my thing so i wouldn't do that. Though maybe if someone came out with a brushed aluminium trim kit i would do that on the dash.

Oh, lastly, the fake plastic "cf" front seat inserts (on the headrest area), i would like to replace those with something else, either real CF or brushed alum.

MrBonus... HAHA pimp that ishhhh.

To me the interior is just fine, except for the tan pillars and headliner.
Why oh why do auto makers do that? Gets on my nerves! I will have all the tan pieces (Pillars, headliner, visors) painted black to blend with the rest of the interior. Yes I know it will be a pain and probably a waste of money but seeing it just makes me cringe LOL.

Oh yeah and an espresso machine... Just to keep the ladies awake on those late nights... ooooohhh yeahhhh. Who my kidding I don't get none, damn! LOL

Speaking of wheels, anyone think there's likely to be an aftermarket wheel with telescoping ability? Heck, even just something to add that to the existing wheel? Thats the first interior mod i would do.

Robotix Junior

an interesting one there mate. i have never seen a wheel with telescoping ability on an Evo

05-08-2008, 03:37 PM
Really? Didn't know that. I wonder why. Driving position is so important, and given this is a car quite a few people track you would think that would be part of the package. I can live with it, but it's really my "biggest issue" with the car so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed i guess.

Dynamat is another interior modification i'm thinking about. I hate how expensive the stuff is, but i think it would make the drive a bit more enjoyable while on the highway since this is my daily driver.

I'd love to see some replacement trim for the faux-carbon fibre they have all over the interior, although I hear in the MR (which I've ordered and still have not seen...grrrr...) its piano black. Something, uh, different/real. And no "stick on" aluminum cover things either! Love to see something other than "silver colored plastic" on the steering wheel (you know the middle/center spoke of the steering wheel), aluminum or something. Oh, the glowing door trim/scuff protector from the Accessories catalogue is pretty nifty too. And thick rubber mats...that's a MUST for any car I own cause of the rainy weather here. LOL.

Carbon Fibre or Brushed Aluminum trim, steering wheel front trim/replacement, door trims, rubber mats...oh and replacing the red HVAC LEDs with blue/white ones, ah heck, all the interior lights with LEDs (white). That a good list?

Im not really concerned about the dash. It looks OK with the NAV system to me. I really want to do something to the side door panels and the seats. Mostly the side door panels though they look super cheap for a car with a msrp of 40k. The seats are an easy fix Im going to put down some leather with a nice red baseball stitch seam.

have u guys seen the door panels from the MR? It actually has a leather-padded arm-rest along with some additional detail to the sides as far as stitching, etc...

That is actually a very good weave. I do prefer dry carbon however, but I know most of the market out there likes the "wet" look.

Sorry for the stupid question but, what is dry carbon?

Thx

GoKimiGo!
08-05-2008, 01:23 PM
Dry carbon refers to the preimpregnated epoxy method instead of painting over the weave.

The prepreg (dry carbon) method is stronger (and more expensive) than the postpreg (wet carbon) method, and it doesn't have the shiny wet look, instead it has a duller dry look. Race cars use the prepreg method carbon parts.

It would take a very big post to explain it all but read on here if you are interested in finding out more details

No problem at all. At the moment I have not seen any dry carbon parts except one company that makes a dry carbon hoodscoop. 95% of the carbon parts you will see released for the Evo X will be wet look parts as there is some bling factor associated with "Hey look I have a carbon fiber hood!"

Dry carbon parts are also usually painted over as they aren't UV protected, so if you leave them in the sun the epoxy will turn a ugly yellowish tint. There's for no more bling factor as no one but yourself (and anyone you tell) will know you have a carbon hood or trunk unless they go knocking their knuckle on all your body panels. But that is stealthy, more my style :)

I keep thinking how the rest of the interior i'm kind of ok with. The trim is not the best, but its much nicer than on the older evo's and i can live with it. you bought one though, didnt you?

if my company was trying to get a car in a certain price point i would most definitely cut here and there because i know the car (like the evo) is going to be bought by a select market. if it were a typical daily driver of course i would put money into the interior and what the customer sees, but with a sports car i wouldnt hesitate to cut some corners in the interior design to get the overall price down.

the evo has never been known for a nice interior. nor has subaru. that said, ive bought 2 subarus in the past and will be buying an evo x in the near future. im not worried about the average bland interior. i want an awd performance car.

not starting anything, just my outlook on how people complain about a cheaper interior in a pocket rocket sports car.

joey
08-20-2008, 08:22 PM
i did buy one cause thats the car that i wanted. but even so i can still complain about how cheap the interior is because i bought one. they spent more on the seats then the rest of the interior. dont get me wrong i love the car and everything about it but i just think that they could have done a little better than what they did. i see what your saying and im not disagreeing im just stating my opinion

GoKimiGo!
08-20-2008, 08:50 PM
A quick example, the steering wheel silver trim is very close to the look and texture of the aluminum shift knob and handbrake.

It wouldn't have cost Mitsubishi anything more to have the harness holes in the Recaros and the faux carbon fiber trim on the dash and doors painted with that finish. It may have quite possibly been cheaper for all we know and it would break up the all black theme a little bit and improve the look of the interior.

That isn't a monutary issue, it is a design choice issue.

To tell you guys the truth I am very happy with the interior of my car, especially with the Navi it looks very nice, besides I'm always looking at the road anyway so it doesn't affect me even if it weren't that nice.

Besides customizing my interior will mean that it will be exclusive to me anyway, so that is a plus

joey
08-20-2008, 10:05 PM

i do know that i thought that little hole in the bottom of the steering wheel looked rather goofey.

overall though i thought the x's interior was actually a step up from a wrx (what im used to). its by no means anything fancy and pretty (350z) but its not an ugly interior by any means.

all that said, what a car for the mid 30s.

I have not even purchased mine yet, but have been wondering about redoing the dash when I do get it. I'd love to have something with a more flowing look to it. The gauge cluster looks like it's just stuck on there and I think it would look much nicer if they had something that flowed across from each side. Plus, all the aftermarket gauges that people want to put in could be taken care of with a dash that had extra space available. I'd have to find a wreck with a dash for a template and I've never done anything like this before. I'm pretty creative and can bang the hell outta things with a hammer, so how hard can it be? :shades: The upholstery and color should be fairly easy to find for covering the top. I'm figuring it has some type of foam with a rubberized/faux leather finish.

I'll have to see what pictures I can find of the dashboard to download and try redesigning it in Fireworks/PhotoShop. Just for my own information, how many aftermarket gauges would people be looking to insert? I see the pods usually having at least three. Also, I'd need to find out the measurements of all the dash pieces so I can make the new positions for items to scale. I'd hate to design something like this and then find out the gauges won't even fit! Most stock pieces would remain where they are when it comes to vents, but the rest would give a blank canvas for all the additional pieces.

BTW, I'm going to look for some pics, but I was wondering if anyone had any good ones that I can use as a template for doing a soft copy mockup. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what the view is like from behind the wheel to gauge (no pun intended) how things can be obstructed from the driver's point of view.
