: S-AWC Service Required Warning
fattytoofat 02-20-2011, 01:51 PM Does anyone know what causes the S-AWC Service Required light to come on?
Is it still ok to drive the car with the warning light on without causing damage to the S-AWC system?
Thanks
NHLFan3507 02-20-2011, 02:21 PM There are several things that may cause this.
From the owners manual...."if the ambient temperature drops and viscosity of the AWC control fluid increases, the warning may be displayed. After the vehicle is driven for a while, if the engine is restarted after the AWC control fluid warms up or the ambient temperature increases, the S-AWC control will start operating again if the '!' mark goes out."
I had this happen once, shut the car off, left it for about a half hour and when I turned it on, the signal was gone. That's what you should try first. If it goes out, there's nothing wrong with your system. If it stays on, or keeps going out and coming back on, you should have it checked out. You don't need to immediately stop running it, but I would get it in quick.
You could always be low on AWC fluid.
Is it cold where you are where that could be a problem? How many miles?, and have you had the AWC serviced recently with a mileage checkup?
fattytoofat 02-20-2011, 08:18 PM the signal goes away after I turn off the car but it comes back on after I drive again.
I live in canada and the temp is pretty cold here..it has been very cold the last couple of weeks 0 to -10 degrees Celsius.
got about 30k miles...AWC fluid is at max
no AWC service recently

Bad alignment, bad steering angle sensor or calibration, a malfunction in the self-test of the hydraulic unit, wheel speed sensor...... best thing is to scan it. A code will pin point this much faster.

Scanning it for the code is definiitely the best starting point.
fattytoofat 02-21-2011, 05:34 PM is it still ok to drive until I can get to dealership for service?
fattytoofat 02-21-2011, 10:02 PM got a ACD C161e Code for the S-AWC service required warning light.
Does anyone know what that means?

See the link below. Page 3 outlines the codes. Sounds like the S-AWC Pump failed, meaning it should be replaced, hopefully under warranty. Just remember the Mitsu warranty, and how they may claim any mods you may have could "cause" the issue.
I'm pretty sure it's driveable until you get to the dealership, you just don't have the AWC functioning. I wouldn't prolong getting it to the dealer, and you should be able to drive it there versus a tow. It looks like the install will take a while.
Good luck!

If its been that cold there is a good chance the pump has died. There have been several people who have had the fluid freeze or get partially frozen and this causes the pump to fail. Your best bet right now is to have the dealer look at it and hopefully replace it under warranty.
fattytoofat 02-22-2011, 05:53 PM I just went to dealership today. They said that all it needed was a reflash for the AWC. I hope they just didn't get lazy and did not want to do the replacement for the pump since I got the FAILED code according to that posting.

Yeah hopefully not. I would think the CEL would trip again if it was only a re-flash. You could always ask the service manager/service tech very specific questions to see if they can explain it. If they can't, then unfortunately you'll have to wait and see.
EvolutionTheory 02-24-2011, 04:23 PM I Probably know the answer to this question, but would the S-AWC pump be under the general warranty, or the powertrain warranty? I'm hoping its the powertrain, but assuming the general. My car is in the shop right now with this same problem but luckily I still have 2 months or about 2500 miles left on my warranty so it should all be free. My fear is that if they fix the problem, will it just come back once my general warranty expires? Mine malfunctioned when I started my car one morning when it was -7 degrees F. I'm guessing the pump is busted
kelvar13 02-24-2011, 04:33 PM LOL i just got a phone call today and apparently there is a service bulletin for the awc pump. I have to take my car in to have them check my new pump they installed two months ago to make sure everything is kosher so it doesn't break in the future. I wonder if its a mechanical check or software (could be like fattytoofat and i need a reflash).

As long as the reflash works, you're golden.

Do you have a link to the TSB? I'm sure my dealer knows about it too, but just in case they play the "I dont know what you're talking about" game, I'd like some proof. I don't know why they don't just make this a recall since so many people are going to be screwed once their warranty is over.
fattytoofat 02-24-2011, 05:08 PM mine ended up being more then just a reflash...pump is gone...luckily it's covered under warranty still...the reflash is supposed to just prolong the life of the pump...not really a complete fix

guess this is what i'll be getting then... i'll ask about it when i drop off the car. I think I'm getting it done tomorrow.
fattytoofat 02-24-2011, 05:21 PM ask them what code they pulled when they checked the ECU...if it's C161e...it means pump failure and has to be replaced. That's the code I got.
kelvar13 02-24-2011, 06:19 PM my pump has already been replaced. I'm not sure the exact code I was throwing but i got the service required message with the drivetrain showing and the front wheels to the right
fattytoofat 02-24-2011, 06:24 PM you can pull the code if you have an AP or access to one
kelvar13 02-24-2011, 08:10 PM its already been cleared. I no longer get the error message
EvolutionTheory 02-25-2011, 08:46 PM I got a call back from my dealer yesterday and I'm getting a new pump under warranty! I was hoping the old one would die before it ended. I guess when the Service Required light comes on, they just try to reflash it and if it doesn't clear, they order the pump and tell you to come back when they get it for the install. Good deal. Hopefully the new one lasts FOREVER because I'm not paying over $2K for a pump.
kelvar13 02-25-2011, 09:32 PM congrats...i got mine checked out by the dealer. They said it was a mechanical check no reflash involved. It doesn't get too cold down here so I have a feeling i just got a dud after my accident.

Nothing lasts forever, lol, but by the time it "wears out" they'll either be cheap as dirt or your car will be obsolete.
EvolutionTheory 04-12-2011, 05:04 PM I got 2 pumps for the price of one! They technicians at Mitsu accidentally replaced my ABS pump instead of the AWC one in the rear, then had to order the correct one and replace it. Kind of funny if you ask me, but I'm happy I have 2 new pumps and my S-AWC working great!
trick3d 08-30-2011, 06:29 PM ^why im scared to get even an oil change at mitsu.
festertat2 09-17-2011, 06:58 PM Does anyone know where the ecu for the awc pump is located on an 08 gsr. The Dealer read the codes and said it was the ecu, the pump was ok. I found another unit and was going to install it myself.
discogodfather 09-20-2011, 08:11 PM Remove the lower panel under the steering wheel and you can get to it. It's behind and under the steering wheel.

Hello,
I have this light pop up every time i turn on my car.
I changed all fluids yesterday and the light still on. I when to alignment and they told me i had -2 degrees on the left back wheel and that they could align it correctly because the eccentric bolts where robbed loose....they don't do there job.
I scanned the car and nothing popped up, the lowest temperature we get is 10c not even 0 so it can't be the pump its just 16k.
Is there a code for alignment? I couldn't fin one.
Thanks
discogodfather 12-27-2011, 11:08 PM Bad alignment triggers WSS codes because the wheel speeds are different enough. It would be a rear WSS related code.
taylorsherk 12-28-2011, 12:00 AM I had that light come on when i put my spare tire on. I guess having different tires can cause this
Demon X 01-06-2012, 03:24 PM My S-AWC system went down on tuesday :( Service Required light is on and I dont hear the pump go on :(
SlickDude 02-15-2012, 02:03 AM sorry to beat a dead horse but C161D: electric pump relay circuit system (malfunction)?
discogodfather 02-15-2012, 04:18 AM Sounds like a bad relay, do the salt shaker test on it.

jlowe99 02-25-2012, 08:25 PM Curious about you guys that have had pump failure. Is that only on the 08s? I'm in Canada and have driven in a lot of -20 to -30 C weather with no issues but my MR is an 09. I'm due for fluid replacement which I have not done yet and am wondering about how important it is to replace on time. Usually the transaxle type fluids are good for much longer than they spec in their maintenance schedules but in this case I'm not so sure. Any comments or has anyone seen any cases of failures resulting from not replacing fluids on time?
SmokeSolid 02-27-2012, 05:56 AM Hi, i change fluids every 3000 miles or 3 trackdays.
Sawd warning also pops up overboosting with the cobb ap stage 2 maps. Just set a low waste gate map and give it a try.
Ive changed pumps this last weekend holded for 17 k on a 2008.
I drove it for 3500 miles with out it working properly. Just push the asc button 3 secs and drive like a champ it will push like a rat on crack bro.
Best

starmax 05-04-2012, 03:57 AM Mine was throwing this warning light several times last summer when it was really hot outside and I was stuck in stop and go traffic. Brought it to the dealer and they applied the re-flash for it and everything was fine. The last couple days it has finally gotten above 70 outside and now this warning light is showing up all the time. It never stays on, but reappears about 50% of drives I take. Checked it with EvoScan (v2.9) and it said I had a C0120 code, but I can't seem to find much on that. The only hits I got were vague ABS errors.
Got 30k miles and have yet to do my 30k maintenance, but not sure if that would help. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
starmax 05-04-2012, 09:55 PM Okay, cleared the Trouble Codes with EvoScan this morning, then drove to work. After about 15 mins the S-AWC Service Required light comes on. I pull the DTCs when I get to work, but its says none are present. So I'm relieved it's not a C161E, but now I'm not sure what to do. I hate to ignore it and potentially do damage to my drivetrain. I am going to do my 30k service soon, any chance that could fix it?
thanks!
RREVO 05-08-2012, 09:51 PM Mine just went on during a cross-country drive that lasted 26 hours, in the Atlanta, heat and is still on. Not covered under Power-train warranty so this F****n Sucks!!!!! The Mitsu pumps were manufactured bad from the get go like all the other S**t!!!!! Maybe all the people at MOD that have shot pumps can park next to each other and protest!!!!! Whats another $2,000.00 right LOL!!!!!
starmax 05-08-2012, 09:53 PM did you bring your's to the dealer? did they confirm your pump is shot?
EVOshhhhhh! 05-20-2012, 01:45 PM The problem could be caused by a faulty relay. Another possiblity is that the AWC pump is not functioning properly. I am currently having this problem. It will not affect the car at all though.
I just got the "4wd system service required" light as well. It was very hot out yesterday (92F degrees) and I was driving non-stop, so I'm thinking that may have been a contributing factor. I drove the car for a few minutes this morning and the CEL did not come back on . I will keep an eye on it, but all of my fluid levels are normal. I do need to replace all of my brake pads (rears are down to the clips) so I'm also wondering if badly worn brakes can cause this CEL as well??

Do you have the flash fix for this? I had the dealer flash mine when I had some recall work done last summer and it fixed it for me until just recently.
For the past 3 weeks I will get this light pretty much every time I drive the car for 20 mins. I tried pulling the codes and got nothing. I was due for new pads (my rears are down to the clips too), brake fluid, and my 30k mile maintenance, so i decided to do that before bringing it to the dealer to get it checked out. Well, I did all that yesterday and drove it this morning and did not get the light. Please understand that I got this light every single time I drove my car the last 3 weeks if I drove it for 20+ mins.
Having said all that, I do think there is something to having your brake pads down to the clips and this light. I have no idea why, but we all know these cars have lots of strange voodoo issues...

I haven't done anything with the car quite yet, as the CEL light just came on yesterday afternoon. I did drive the car this morning for about 10 minutes and the light did not appear. I'll continue to monitor it this week, but I'll be replacing all the brake pads and upgrading to SS brake lines within a few days.
starmax 05-21-2012, 03:15 PM Sigh... did my morning commute this morning, lots of stop/go for about 40 mins, got the AWC Service Required light about 2 mins before I got to work:wallbash:
Pulled the code with EvoScan, C1290, U0100, U3FFF (?).
Found C1290 and U0100 in the Service Manual, seems like an electrical communication error, but there's the possibility of a pump failure :(
I'm going to keep digging through the manual and see what else I can find.
KickAss 05-21-2012, 04:21 PM Were you using EvoScan 2.9? I remember I got similar codes when I used 2.9, which was totally bogus. I put in 2.8 and tried again and got the correct codes.

EvoScan 2.9.0021 (had to select AYC for the DTC option)
I tried pulling them with 2.8 but didn't get anything, but it's strange because I get the service required light regularly but only get DTC codes once and a while.
starmax 05-21-2012, 06:27 PM My S-AWC system went down on tuesday :( Service Required light is on and I dont hear the pump go on :(
How do I check to see if the pump is going on? Can you hear it from under the car or something?
