: Quick Clutch Part Question
Spyda-117 03-14-2011, 09:14 PM Hey, so I just finished ordering my Spec 2+ clutch but talked to a friend at the place that im getting installed and he told me to get a new part that the clutch slides up and down, as we're tearing my car apart anyways. My only problem is that I can't remember what it was called. I have it on backorder from the dealership and its like ridiculously cheap (20 dollars) but I kind of need my car back in working order ASAP and was hoping to find it online. It's some sort of moving sleeve that the clutch sits on?
Sorry still not very smart as far as this goes, however if anyone needs advice on how much HP an Injen Decal adds I'm your man!! lol
sgtpruitt 03-14-2011, 09:23 PM throw out bearing?
Spyda-117 03-14-2011, 10:26 PM Don't think its the bearing because im pretty sure that comes with my kit

^^ what I ordered.
Spyda-117 03-22-2011, 05:05 AM So it turned out to be a front retainer, odd.
Also, My clutch arrived today but I was wondering if its worthwhile to put in a new flywheel at this time too. Seeing as how im paying 1100 for labour to get this thing in, Is resurfacing the flywheel a sufficient method of fitment, or am I just going to have to crack her back open and have that replaced within 20,000 km due to the resurfacing damaging or causing issues with clutch engagement?
Please keep in mind that my car only has 28,000 km on it to start with so the Flywheel should be in relatively good condition.
sgtpruitt 03-23-2011, 01:06 AM Nah, the stock flywheel is alright if you resurface it. You'll probably replace the clutch disk again before you do the flywheel.

Front retainer??? :wtfsign:
Do you mean the piece the TOB locks into? Other than that, sounds like complete nonsense...
joshmosdef 03-23-2011, 02:41 AM well i just installed a new clutch and flywheel. my stock flywheel couldn't be resurefaced, b/c it was wrapped? wtf?? mitsubishi recomends not resurefacing the old flywheel.

This thing, yeah I have no idea what it does, the guy doing the work said he needed it so I ordered one. Glad to hear that a new flywheel isnt needed, as I'm gettin' pretty tapped lol
Spyda-117 04-04-2011, 09:06 PM So, as some of you may know, my clutch install hasn't been going very smoothly. Turns out that the throwout bearing keeps popping out every time they put it in and take it to test it out. We called the place where I ordered it from and they said to send pictures and I was told they would likely refund or replace it. I ordered a Spec 2+ clutch kit. After being without my vehicle for a week it looks like I'll be starting from stage one all over again, my question is this, do I take the refund or the replacement? How many other people have had this issue and was it resolved when the replacement arrived? or am I better off trying a different brand of clutch and hoping for better luck? As much as I'd love to keep re-installing and hoping for the best, the clutch was replaced out of necessity and quite frankly I dont have the patience or the extra cash lying around as this car is my DD.
also: any idea if spec re-imburses for excessive labor costs due to defective parts?
lallen3 04-05-2011, 03:49 AM You have a bad TOB or a bad retaining ring. Make them swap you for a stage three +... Get a new TOB. Done.
Spyda-117 04-05-2011, 03:52 AM would the retaining ring be a part that was supplied with the clutch kit, and as such be covered, or is it a seperate part?
and I probably shouldnt attempt a 3+, as I've said elsewhere, this is my DD with zero mods and I want to cause minimal stress on all other components of the vehicle, I've read some scary things about the diff pins if you're using a clutch thats too heavy duty for what you're putting down.
lallen3 04-05-2011, 03:54 AM Yes sir. It's in the center of the pressure plate tines. (Part of clutch kit)
Spyda-117 04-05-2011, 03:56 AM excellent, thanks lallen, you're always answering my noobish questions.
lallen3 04-05-2011, 04:07 AM Lol. No prob.

This piece?
Spyda-117 04-05-2011, 04:20 AM I think it's an issue with the piece on the other side of that piece but I'm not 100% sure, i'm not doing the work myself and although I did have a chance to see what the problem was... it was through this little tiny hole in my underbody and I was squinting lol.
bpeterson20_89 04-05-2011, 04:29 AM ah ok, the picture is of my CM Fx400 when it was going in. We sent it back to CM and they overnighted it back to us. I didn't ask for any reimbursement as far as labor goes, lucky the shop i went to only charged me for 1.5 tear downs.
Where are you getting it done?
the labor rate seems awfully high.
Spyda-117 04-05-2011, 04:35 AM Dealership is doing the work and I'm getting charged 1,100 for each time the vehicle taken apart. I havent had any issues in the past, and even this I can't blame them for as there's not much they can do when given a defective part. Even if I did have an issue with the quality of work they're doing which I don't, as they're doing it reasonably fast and have been more than accomodating with booking times and letting me know what's going on, I'm more or less over their knee in this situation as I'm in a small town in Canada and there aren't many options up here when it comes to getting your vehicle serviced.
Spyda-117 04-07-2011, 05:26 PM Just and Update:
I have now had my car parked for a little over 3.5 weeks (taking into account the time taken to have the parts shipped) and the dealership has sent numerous pics. to Spec showing the faulty TOB. However; Spec is not attempting to play the "it's not our part it's your install card." I know my installers didnt mess it up because my sister had them do her clutch last year. Has anyone else had any issues with Spec regarding warranty in the past? I kind of need my vehicle back and this is starting to become tedious.
