: Cobalt SS/TC owner considering Ralliart
vahdyx 03-24-2011, 05:36 AM Hi guys,
I really hate to hijack the forums for such a question, but I couldn't find the info on the web. So I signed up and thought I'd ask.
A little about me. I have owned my Cobalt SS Turbocharged for about a year now and the speed is great. I currently have 310whp and 377wtq on a superflow dyno and I'm happy with it so far. So why consider a ralliart. Well to be quite frank, the negativity around the car is getting to me. Not only that the squeaks inside are driving me crazy. Last but not least, I really want 4 doors and I don't wanna go balt to balt so I'm shopping around. I like the look better and watching youtube videos are making me fall in love with them. I love the back end soooooo much. I don't think I can afford an Evo X right now so the search led me to Ralliart.
I want something similar in performance, big trunk like my cobalt for my hockey gear and tennis racquets and other junk.
How hard is it to get a ralliart to be similar to my cobalt in performance safely for daily driving.
Something very important to me is noise, is there a lot of interior noise?
Also what are common issues everyone has been having?
I'm sorry for the overload of questions, but thanks for taking the time to read and answer and help me with this decisions.
Respectfully,
Michael aka Vahdyx
Stock? 03-24-2011, 11:36 AM Hey man, I came from a SS/TC as well. I think you will be disspointed in the Ralliart after coming from a full bolt on SS/TC with tune (Which will go toe to toe with an Evo in a straight line *From a roll*)
The Evo/Ralliart's have quite a bit of rattles inside. Road noise isn't too bad. But if your going to get a Evo or a Rallyart, your going to want to mod it. So the interior noise won't be as noticable because you'll have an aftermarket exhaust.
I would stick with the SS/TC, you won't get anything for it when you sell it.
Sequence 03-24-2011, 11:45 AM my bolt on TC with tune would burn a Stock Evo from a roll or dig.. I ran 12.9 @109
but as Stock said a Ralliart will seem like dirt compared to SS/TC hell I think my Evo X is slow compared to my SS/TC, I would say check a WRX because one thing is FWD=poop now that I switched to AWD world I will never go back
Stock? 03-24-2011, 11:47 AM Yup! I was referring more towards a full bolt on Evo vs Full bolt on SS. (The evo would own it from a dig)
duhveed 03-24-2011, 12:52 PM What a SS community here lol. I miss my ss/tc all the time.
1) you want a big trunk? Ha! Cross that off your list not gonna happen
2) it'll take a lot to make a ralliart the same performance. Especially in the higher speeds my old Balt would have kicked my Evo's ass lol
3) Interior noise? Evo is louder with road and engine noise. Rattles are the same too even my shift boot ring rattles lol.
Kiss your mileage goodbye too lol
Does all this bother me? Not at all I didn't buy this car expecting a Lexus
VegetaX 03-24-2011, 01:26 PM Whats the trap speed from a bolt ons ss?
Sequence 03-24-2011, 01:32 PM 109-111 w/tune
105 just bolt ons (stock basically the ECU learns itself back to stock so you are not gaining hp)
VegetaX 03-24-2011, 01:35 PM 109-111 w/tune
105 just bolt ons (stock basically the ECU learns itself back to stock so you are not gaining hp)
ohhh alright than is close, but never seen a ss/tc run that trap speed at my track. I ask one guy with full bolt ons and he was trapping 107 mph.
Stock? 03-24-2011, 01:36 PM A tune on those cars makes a world of difference. It's all about the launch, obviously.

well at the 1/4 is always about the launch in order to get good times, i cant remember what was his time but it was close of hitting 12's.
I'd get an older Evo like a 9, depends on what you want, I wouldn't get a ralliart, its like getting a 335i, what happens when an M3 pulls up.
Stock? 03-24-2011, 01:45 PM I ran a 13.4 with just an intake and UICP. 2.0 60'.
vahdyx 03-24-2011, 01:56 PM I didn't realize, I just assumed that since the car is Mitsubishi the quality would be better than GM. Also watching the video reviews on youtube there were some videos that said the ralliart was a better package per dollar than EVO.
I assumed since the cobalt stock is 260/260 and the ralliart is 237/253 that they are comparable in performance. That's only 23/7 difference
Thanks guys, real informative, I didn't realize half this stuff

Yes but you dyno them stock for stock and GM actually did something well they didnt exagerate the HP, alot of times you see 305/300 BUT it dyno 265/260, as for the Cobalt mine dynoed 248/258 100% stock so GM rated the HP very well..
As for the Ralliart being rated 237/253 you might want to check what they actually dyno at
Also Idk what the Ralliart blocks are made out of but I know the TC LNF can take a good 450 lbs/torque on stocker and for a good amount of time, I was at 323/402 and beat the helll out of my car for a good 30k and never had problems and seen others do the same for 2x longer
good thing there is a bunch of former SS/TC owners in this thread
also when it comes to dealership, GM is better then Mitsubishi so if you plan on modding say bye bye to Warranty, as for GM reps give a little more lee-way
duhveed 03-24-2011, 02:08 PM Yeah my evo stock dyno'd 240awhp lol
It's only 277awhp with the stg1 cobb tune
Oh and my Balt with a shit launch got 13.7 @ 111mph 21psi tuned
Eyler_Evo_X 03-24-2011, 02:16 PM Yeah my evo stock dyno'd 240awhp lol

The Cobalt is also designed for straight line speed and drag, hence the no lift shift. I'd like to see its cornering prowess compared to the Evo. That's where it becomes less of a "my car his this much horsepower" thing and more of a driver thing.
duhveed 03-24-2011, 02:20 PM ^^well I'm sure you've read the lap times from Car and Driver and what they got :)
mlomker 03-24-2011, 02:23 PM I'd get an older Evo like a 9, depends on what you want
They sell for as much or more than a used X. Depends on what you want, like you say.
One of the local shop owners buys and sells Evos quite a bit. He's getting another IX because he's mostly into drag but he thinks the X handles better on a road course.
Sequence 03-24-2011, 02:24 PM ehhhh idk about that SS/TC are good at cornering too and he isnt comparing an Evo to it, he is comparing a Ralliart (the OP)
Eyler_Evo_X 03-24-2011, 03:05 PM ^^well I'm sure you've read the lap times from Car and Driver and what they got :)
2008 Evo, 2008 tune, non-professional driver. I think that article is one of the most poorly executed comparisons I've ever seen. I'd argue that the 2010 X with the new tune would fare much better.

The RA still has AWD and stability control. In theory, it should corner better. Personally, I find the ralliart to be a waste of money, but that's just me.
slim8605 03-24-2011, 03:25 PM "In theory" the Ralliart should be better. In reality, it would get spanked by a SS straight line and around corners.
Sequence 03-24-2011, 03:26 PM Only one way to settle this, Forza anyone?
notfa5t 03-24-2011, 07:58 PM ss/tc is a better car then the RA all around. I would wait till I could afford a used X or XI. If your not going to be tracking your car on a road course and dont plan to mod alot, the RA will work. you can find a used X for around 25k with low miles. That will be a payment around 430-450 for 60 months depending on your Rate.
Ralliart26 03-24-2011, 10:34 PM I mean my ralliarts running 11s? and honestly I havent spent that much in it at all... and it handles amazingly (coming from a z28). I don't think its a "waste"
slim8605 03-25-2011, 04:49 AM Definitely not a waste.
Darksun280 03-25-2011, 05:17 AM my bolt on TC with tune would burn a Stock Evo from a roll or dig.. I ran 12.9 @109

Silly comparison but ok we'll work with it
Test pipe, panel filter, cobb Ap stage 2 tune your running mid to low 12's anf trapping 111's in an X. Bump up the rev limiter to 8k and 112-113 traps are obtainable.
if we're talking about the ralliart though I'd stick with the cobalt even though potential wise there is a dude on here with a raliart with a stock x fmic, stock x tubro, greddy cat back, ams etune who went 11.9 @112 a few days back.
I had a cobalt too I remember you from the cobalt forums. I'm biased though cause I grew up on light weight, Fwd, roll race type cars. My X is a beast compared to my other cars performance wise but after seeing that it weighed 3800 pounds with driver I thought about all the power Im wasting moving it's tank ass around.
duhveed 03-25-2011, 05:59 AM still from a roll I'd never want to go against a ss/tc
...at least for how my car is now lol

Learn the art of hitting the brakes at the end of 4th gear and you'll never loose a roll. Touch 5th and thats an auto loss even against stock civics lol
nicksevo 03-26-2011, 06:43 PM I like my evo but rilly I love cobalts...you can get a 4door balt ss turbo if u rilly want a 4door....but ij love this car to. I'm comming from a saturn ion redline so I was supercharger not turboed but I was prittymuch a ss and I just hated wheel hop and being fwd sucked...reason mainly for my switch
RA_Rod 03-27-2011, 06:56 PM So, you say you want trunk space? and performance? If you can find one, get a Sportback.
I just finished a 2,400 mile road trip with wife, and daughter, all the luggage, and shopping, in the hatch, back seat was empty.
And I have NO rattles in the interior, and got a high MPG of 23.5
With some bolt ons you can reach 320 whp / 275 wtq (Bryan@GST or Gates Sportback).
Hard to beat for performance, and usability.
:)

Yeah that's what I'm interested in, no kids, but I play a lot of hockey and tennis and occasionally backpacking. Sometimes I'm too lazy to take stuff out of my car so I like to leave them in there for a month or so lol. I still need to shop for groceries and stuff so that's why trunk was important. As for 4 doors, I guess I just love the look of 4 doors more. It's functional and sexier to me. WRX, EVO, Ralliarts, Cobalt 4 doors, GTI 4 doors, they just look better to me.
I just got back from test driving an Evo X unfortunately I fell in love with it.... so I think I'm gonna start saving for that, but I need to do more research... Trunk absolutely tiny, I don't know what I can put in there so I have some thinking to do.
I'm gonna bring the fiance to test drive a ralliart maybe next weekend, maybe I can get her off this VW fantasy and she can have the ralliart and I can drive it regularly :godance:
Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it.
hotdog 03-27-2011, 07:26 PM I'm imagining you in tennis shorts, holding two balls, with your head cocked.
If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.
RA_Rod 03-27-2011, 10:47 PM I wanted a Hatch, all-wheel drive, performance, and an Automatic, so the RA Sportback ended up being one of the few cars that met my needs. I considered the Audi A3, but too pricey.
I have just about 5,000 miles on mine now and I am really very pleased. I had an 06 Accord Hybrid, and I think the RA is just as nice inside, with a much better sound system. The car handled very well over the rainy mountain passes, never felt like I was losing any grip. The transmission and AWD system are pretty impressive.
I did not read this entire thread but the BIG difference will be in fuel economy. A modded RA will suck way more gas than your modded SS.
I hated the COBALT interior, although the seats aren't bad. CHEEEEEEEEEEEAP. Worse than MITSU!!
