: Wii Fit
soopah 05-22-2008, 11:29 PM OK, I broke down and bought Wii Fit yesterday. I intended it to be a gift to my wife (told her about it on Mother's day) but last night I tried it and it is kind of fun. I need to lose 20 lb according to the game, but in my mind I am only about 10 lb from my ideal weight, but I need to turn another 10 to 15 lb of fat into muscle. That sounds like the key strike against the game, it does not factor in your ratio of muscle to fat, just does BMI based on weight and height. Also, it has no warm-up routines. I just ran through the sequence of activities to warm-up, not thinking the yoga poses required any real warm-up. Then again, I'm just a couch potato, not a fitness guru. And that makes me the target market for this game!
I found this parody of the Wii Fit already on Youtube:

hotroddude 05-23-2008, 12:04 AM that video was hilarious :bowlol:
soopah 05-23-2008, 12:22 AM The voice over sounds like the dead pan sarcastic voice of Ron Livingstone (Office Space).
soopah 05-23-2008, 12:34 AM Here is another funny parody of video game systems, this time PS3 vs Wii. I think you will enjoy!

Kooldino 05-23-2008, 02:19 PM That's hilarious.
So Soopah, how IS wii fit?
Also, I feel you on the BMI thing. It doesn't account for muscle weight vs fat weight. It's a dumb way of doing things.
Kwiq Niss 05-23-2008, 03:09 PM I got it for my wife too. Kid behind the counter though put it in her name instead of mine, so she got the reserve call, which kind of ruined the suprise, but I was watching her play, and figured I'd give it a shot. And... this is hard to say... its (deep breath... sigh) fun!

If you are actually working out regularly and doing yoga regularly then I don't think this 'game' will be as much use to you. There is still a play component (ski jump, ski slalom, soccer ball heading, hula hooping, boxing, put the ball in the hole! and more) and a challenge component with the yoga poses in terms of balance, but as an actual fitness routine it will not replace your neighbourhood gym. Tracking your progress is fun, and it does work to monitor your weight and track it with a calendar.
I think the main benefit of Wii Fit is if it gets you to do more exercise and activities than you would otherwise do, if you do not regularly exercise (like me, the only exercise I've been getting is yard work). It is of benefit for those that may do frequent or infrequent sports (like tennis, soccer, hockey, basketball, softball, etc.) but do not get to the gym or exercise at home. And it is kind of fun. I've spent about 110 minutes of Wii Fit time so far and the games are entertaining so far.
However, I could see a drop off in interest in this game if you are not actually interested in keeping up with the exercise intent. Much like Wii Sports, the novelty will wear off, and you will use it less frequently.
One thing I would like to change in Wii Fit is to make the trainers customizable. I would prefer to adjust my female trainers look, clothing and, ahem, attributes. :)
I was most suprised at my lack of strength in many areas, including upper body and abs. I had trouble completing 6 full push-ups and after 10 sit-ups (V-crunch-thingies) my stomach was burning! Like the parody imlpies, you do not need a $100 step board to help you to do push-ups and sit-ups, but as part of a game and a whole set of different exercises and activities, it makes it more likely that you WILL do them regularly.
Altogether I give the Wii Fit a 7.5 out of 10.

Doh! I just saw this one and was going to post it. That lady looks skinny enough already. Nice hula hooping panty action!
Tunerhead 08-10-2008, 04:40 AM I just picked up the Wii Fit a couple weeks ago and I think it is pretty good! I do go to the gym but not every day. In lieu of the days missed at the gym I whip out the Wii Fit and hitt up the strength training & boxing. Balance board games are pretty fun too.
Mr. Win 08-11-2008, 11:23 AM A lot of people really like it, I know someone whose dropped 4 dress sizes and logged 40hr so far.
TRUSTcompany9000 08-11-2008, 12:12 PM Just as a side note, PDX won this thread.
