How do you launch a 4wd car (like my Subaru Legacy) without cooking your clutch, or is this not possible, and you've got to pay (replacement clutch) to play?

From what little I've read you've got to drop the clutch while holding something like 5,000+ rpm to get a good launch. I've tried to launch my car at lower rpm and it just bogs down. Once I get going it gives me very nice acceleration, but the first couple seconds feel like I'm in molasses.
