: drive ability on the ACT 6puck
Tephra 05-04-2011, 10:56 AM Hi Guys,
I tossing up between the HDG6 and the XTSS.
I want something that will be very easy for daily driving, yes I will get used to it, but I don't want something that is too annoying.
Thoughts?
Cheers

I do not have the 6 puck. IIRC those that do say it grabs pretty quick and hard. Those that have it like it. EVOM has some good info on it if you search over there. EVO DAVE on EVOM seems to love his.
I have the ACT HDSS sitting here waiting for install. For a driver I think the full face disc is a better option FWIW.
I emailed many members running both and the HDSS seems a little more friendly.
Tephra 05-04-2011, 01:59 PM yeh I like the full face option.. but the tq holding capability is juts on the low side..
compromise I guess :)

I had the X-TG6 from ACT and hated it. Why are you set on a puck clutch?
Well, what power are you running. CLIPSE3GT has the GREEN and he is going with the HDSS in his car, of course he has 35k+ on the stocker.
Also, how often do you really hit it where the torque is an issue? If you are racing I would go with the 6 PUCK. If you just nail it on the street on occasion, I would go with the full face for the 95% of the time of how you are actually using it.

I have a six puck clutch masters waiting. But I am at 32k on my stocker and it still holds with similar mods to clipse. At this point I think I am on borrowed time track days are rough on it so if that's your plan go with a 6 puck if not a full face option is probably smarter in that it's not as hard on the trans and will hold up fine.
mlomker 05-04-2011, 06:40 PM I have the six puck. If you have to deal with much stop-n-go traffic then it can be annoying. You do get use to it but it's better for a weekend car than a daily driver.
braddddddd991 05-04-2011, 07:40 PM I have a 4 puck, and its annoying as first but its becomes normal after a couple of weeks. It will make you love a stock clutch!
whitecomet 05-04-2011, 07:46 PM wow a 4 is even more aggressive than a six you went all out.
pmbaby24 05-04-2011, 07:49 PM i have the exedy stage2 four puck and it's great for dd imo with evo9 cmc from magnus.
bigzzx 05-04-2011, 08:31 PM ^^^ I have this set up to (exedy stage 2 HD four puck with the evo9 cmc) its my dd. its a little rough at first but you get used to it. However i have a little chatter when first taking off but youll learn how to get around this.
pmbaby24 05-04-2011, 08:41 PM my rpm stay up though from 1st to 2nd weird. let say i clutched in at 3k rpm my rpm stays there until i put it into 2nd.

3dman1 05-04-2011, 10:32 PM I hated my act 6 puck for a bit, but after 1000 miles it broke in and is a very nice clutch. It is not real heavy on the pedal and daily driving is not bad at all. I get no chatter going forward but i get a little in reverse

2.5L with a small turbo to begin with... but eventually probably 450 wtq...
so right on the limit of the xtss

Yea the first 1k miles on the sprung 6puck is brutal.
After that it changes alot towards the good side.
Stop and go traffic up an incline still suck horribly.
Do they have hills in Australia? ;)
pmbaby24 05-05-2011, 01:24 AM is chattering bad for the clutch?

Not at all, my exedy twin comes with a warning sticker for people not to get nervous from the noise lol. I have not installed it yet and I am wondering how people like daily driving with the twin disc....
bigmike311 05-05-2011, 02:35 PM i was goign to go with a 6 puck but opted for a competetion clutch stage 3 sprung full face clutch. like everyone else has said it does give slight chatter in first but more in 2nd but im used to it now im about 800 miles into my breakin period. it has the stock pedal feel. no need for upgraded CMC although i plan on doing it as a safety net. look into Competetion Clutches its real nice.
Pushn'lbs 05-05-2011, 02:42 PM Have you looked into specs clutches? I hear there pretty nice! Spec3+ check it out.

:+1:
chkmgnt59 05-05-2011, 04:02 PM I have act hdg6, it's simple to drive. I really question those who say that 6 pucks are hard to drive. The only place I could see it being annoying is uphill stop and go.

^^+1 on this. I've had my ACT sprung 6 puck for almost 8k now on full bolt ons. Same experience as everyone else that has it (chattered a bunch at first then it goes away a bit as well as you learn to engage it better in 1st).
However, I just started developing a whine. It started several weeks ago on the highway when I decided to drive w/o music on the highway ride home. Wasn't very loud, but it was there. The pitch increases with speed not necessarily RPM (shift gears and at same speed the pitch is the same). Then it sort of went away...really have to listen for it and it's not in all gears...usually 4th and 5th.
Then today happened...I gave it a few WOT near redline shifts (1st thru mid 3rd). After totally releasing the throttle in 3rd I left it in gear to engine brake the car a bit. That's when a whirring sound started happening. I came to a red light and tested out my theory (does it only happen when I engine brake/ zero throttle?). No sound whatsoever in 1st gear...then in 2nd-5th it happens when clutch is in gear, not engaged and decelerating.
Is my TOB going bad? When I give the car even partial throttle the noise goes away. I tried recording it, but my phone recorder sucks...I'll take a video with my digital camera to see if it is any better quality.
Any insight is appreciated. If the trans needs to come off to see what the trouble is, send it and the ACD to Jacks Trans just in case?
EDIT: Not looking to thread jack...I'll create a new post.
Lovinmyevo 06-09-2011, 07:10 PM I've had both the 6 puck and full face....I def prefer the full for daily driving...6 puck was way to jumpy
Asleep 06-09-2011, 07:11 PM i have a spec stage 3 6 puck in my 240 with 450whp. my grandmother could drive my car if she wanted to. did a 5k clutch drop in third at 30 mph and lit my tires up. it holds insanely well.
I am really liking the ACT HDSS with Magnus CMC. Very smooth.
Asleep 06-09-2011, 07:29 PM i had a s/s act full face in my turbo altima and absolutely hated it. im surprised i dont have a crazy buffed left leg.
There is a little bit more than stock pedal pressure for sure. I doubt the 6 PUCK is any easier though.
I have the ACT 6 Puck clutch, and I can personally tell you it's a pain in the ass for daily driving. My worst memory with the clutch was when hurricane Rita was heading towards New Orleans and we had to evacuate the city. When I got on the highway the traffic was going 5-10 MPH for about 50 miles and after that trip was over my leg was in constant pain. I still have pain in my ankle from that from time to time. I've had the clutch about 15K and I just received my order of Spec 3+ so I will be putting that on.
Golden 06-09-2011, 08:33 PM I will be getting a Spec 3 +.

I have one, but can't enjoy it thanks to SSP. Hopefully my Magnus gets here on time =P
Golden 06-09-2011, 08:54 PM Spec 3+ doesn't need an upgraded CMC. One of the many reasons I will be getting one.
I like plastic stuff. Plastic valve cover, plastic CMC... I'd get a plastic intake manifold if one was out there.
3dman1 06-09-2011, 09:00 PM I dont know of any cmc failures on the act 6 puck. I would be interested to see how many are out there. I believe the twins are more prone to this problem.

I've made that comment and a few people posted up that they had. Of course some people have had failures on the stock clutch...

Plastic intake would have to be pretty robust to handle boost.

I had one.

I need to look back and see what 6 puck act i bought because my clutch pedal is barely stiffer than stock. I actually expected it to be much heavier than it turned out to be. It is a little grabby but so are all clutches that will hold alot of power.

30 psi isn't that hard to contain with plastic. A plastic pop bottle can do that.

I know, but heat/vibration/extreme temp swings/water/etc.
lallen3 06-09-2011, 09:08 PM No one ever said if my clutch noise was normal either people. I'm just gonna post all over the whole forum until someone answers. I will become a threadjacking ninja.
Golden 06-09-2011, 09:11 PM If other people had the same noise, then it would be normal. I don't have that noise. Nobody else seems to either.

Mine. Twice.
