In case you're wondering where we've been for the past couple of days, we've been dealing with database issues due to a server catastrophe from dreamhost.com

They somehow hosed all of our backups since June 5th, so we're currently running on a 3 month old backup.

You may have to sign up again, and 3 months of posts have been lost.

I'm doing everything I possibly can to resolve these issues and get our data back. I'll keep everyone posted.

Wow, this is my first post in nerely a month (or so it's felt) and I have to say I'm somewhat releived! This is the ONLY forum that I read all posts in, so seeing that there's only 2 pages of unviewed threads, I feel great!

yep.. all your personal CP settings would be gone too.. so if you have turned off email notifications in the last 3 months.. you need to go back in and turn them off.... all pms also lost.. :(

I'm not sure the PM's will be saved. Posts and Users are what Dino is most concerned about at this time. However, I would love to be able to get the pms recovered as well. There are some big guns working on this project. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well, so far I have some good news. I have a copy of the crashed database from the other day, and while most of the tables are filled with zeros, there are two tables that contain a lot of information.

The BIGGIE is the POST table. Not the thread table, not the forum table, etc...just a list of the raw posts.

For example, here's one of the later posts in the table:

I also have a lot of the PM table.

The issue is that some tables that depend on each other are corrupt, which prevents us simply from importing what's good out of the corrupt tables.

My thought at this point is to basically make a bot that reads in all of the PMs and posts and makes NEW posts in the system with the data we have, and to have that bot act as the user who posted it. If we could pull this off, the posts would exist, but the post dates would be wrong (since they would be new posts), but that's minor. My main concern is gathering chunks of posts and making complete threads out of them, and getting those threads to the proper subforum. That may have to be done manually.

Time will tell. But at minimum, we have a lot of post and PM information. The post information is my #1 priority.

Oh damn I consider myself lucky I only had about 80. I think I would have some major issues if I lost thousands.

seriously though, whole tables full of 0's? Jesus F'ing.... can your hosting company take some initiative and do some root cause analysis? If it happened once, it can happen again unless the root cause is determined and addressed. I work in the financial industry in a hosting facility type environment. If we filled a customers database with 0's.....

Regarding a new server - I have a few opitons I'll be looking into as soon as I get this worked out.

Regarding the data, we're currently having a hard time parsing the data out of the files, since it's not formatted in a totally consistent way.
