: Winter Tires and NJ

Just picked up my GG MR this Tuesday. Like many I noticed the sticker on the drivers side door, and being that this will be my winter driver I need some tire advice.

I live in NJ and the temperature here constantly fluctuates. In the winter it will hit freezing temperatures and will probably snow more then a few times, although mostly it will rain and the temperature will at times be much warmer then freezing.

How dedicated a winter tire do I need in these conditions? Can someone recommend a good tire that will fit and work well with the stock BBS rims?

I live in wisconsin, and my evo is my DD all year. Last year I had Goodyear ultra performance winter tires on my 04 R32- Great tires, excellent traction- felt great in snow/slush/packed snow at highway speeds of 70-80mph. Only problem was they were low profile- ended up having to replace both fronts (separate times) thanks to potholes. I always wondered if they were defective and no- I was to cheap for the road hazard. So $600 in tires ended up in over $1000 for the winter, not to mention R32's don't have a spare! Pain in the A$$ to deal with. This year I think im a try out the blizzaks, and just get a cheap rim set up from the tirerack. (Got the goodyears from them- good service and great prices) Personally, I wouldn't used the stock bbs for winter- calculate the cost of mounting winter tires ($100+) and then another $100 in spring to remount the summer tires, and us might as well spend like $400 on a set of rims for winter. I used the stock r32 rims, only cause I knew I was most likely getting rid of the car, and the rims were already curbed/beat from previous owner.

side note- the R32 came stock with Goodyear Eagle F1's (Summer Performance) and these things were amazing in the rain- best tire I've ever had for wet and dry traction. Better than the michielin ps2 performance tires i had on my crossfire. I think i'm a get the F1's this spring- not a fan of the advan's- is it just me or does the Evo x feel squirrely/light in the rain (at highway speeds)

I have a set of hancook Ice bears I run for the winter. I live in Colorado and go snowboarding every week during the winter. Those tires are great in the snow and ice. They are a bit on the pricey side but I get them cheap from my buddy at a tire store.

How much do those Hankook tires run? Couldn't find them on tirerack. What kind of car were they on? Size?

I run them on my X they cost me about $700 and I run a 235/40/18. They are a bit smaller then the stock size just so I could save some money on them.

I live in NJ also and have been happy running Michelin Pilot Alpins.

How you like the alpins? You've used them on the evo x in snow? or a different car?

I run them on a Galant VR-4. Reacts better to steering inputs in the dry than most snow/ice tires but probably at the expense of some grip in extreme deep snow or ice which we haven't seen in NJ for a while. Certainly better than all season tires. They look like the current Pilot Alpin PA2.

I keep hearing great things about Blizzaks, but there isn't snow on the ground 24/7 here. I need something that will have grip in dry and wet cold temperature, with the occasional week of snow.

in fact, i think i might go with these and just run them year round- bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position...they seem like excellent tires and i have always had luck with my bridgestones before

Just adding my 2 cents, but you might want to take a look at the Dumlop M3 Sports as well. They're a little pricey at $120 a piece, but I used them on my RX7 and my buddy used them on his S2000 and they worked for the rear wheel drive cars, so I'm pretty sure they'll work for AWD. They were also on par with a lot of all season tires I had used, with the advantage of working well in the snow. Something to think about.

Having a set of dedicated summer and winter tires, those tires lasted me through 2 winters and still had thread on it, but I'd say with spirited driving you're probably looking at getting 2 winters out of it.

Yeah, I'm stuck between the Potenza RE960AS or the Blizzak lm-25. For me its a debate as to whether I really need the blizzak's seeing as I live downtown chicago and don't drive very much. But heck, I've moved 4 times in the past years so who knows where I'll be next year. I guess the advantage of living downtown is that I put very few miles so the fact that the blizzack's wear faster isn't an issue.

guess i'm going with the blizzack's LOL. just talked myself into it on this post. Thanks!

All seasons really are more practical in our area. Winter tires make sense when there is a solid 4 months of snow on the ground. We're lucky to have it for a few days and all you'll do with snow tires is wear them down quickly when driving on cold pavement.

Verikon After tons of research I've decided to go with these as well. They performed amazingly on tire racks test and are much cheaper than the advan all seasons

That's my rationale as well. All seasons ftw

I plan on going with Yokahama AVID W4S for year round driving in the northeast.

The Yoko A13's will be reserved for drag strip and auto x.

I've had a couple of friends highly recommend the Ziex 512's to me. I'll be getting the 912's for the NJ winter. That website has great pricing, pretty much the same as Discount Tire Direct's eBay store w/ their free shipping.

I recommend the Falken. I had those tires and not once did i get stuck with my STi. The car felt solid on the ground; for everyday driving, the tires are great. No complaints. Now... if you start going nuts on cornering, just remember that they're all seasons and nowhere as good as the OEMs
