I have a couple of light duty Kodak tripods that are good for point and shoot cameras, but they don't seem to fit my SLR very well.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent tripod for an SLR? I have a Nikon D5000.

This is what I use.

I've had it for years, one of the best for the money.

Your best bet is to get a good tripod ($300ish) that you will never outgrow. Go to bhphotovideo dot kahm and look for a Tenba, Giotto, or Manfrotto.

while i am a big advocate for good tripod (i use a $700 gitzo with full Wimberley system plates), for most people a tripod like a Manfrotto is all they need and i did use one for years without any issues even with heavy gear (500 f4 lens with a canon 1dmk2). just go to bhphotovideo and look at Manfrotto kit's.

So basically the one that spicy linked me to?

Does that come with a head or does that need to be purchased separately?

Has to buy a separate head but some places would offer a tripod and head package for a better price
