Hey, I'm just wondering whether any of you who have gotten tints for your EVO X (or new Lancers for that matter), w/o installing the moleskins have had lots of problems with the tint scratching up real bad. Comments?

No issues here. I have an MR & have had 3M tint w/o moleskin for a little less than 3 months. I was asking the tint shop about moleskin & scratching & they said that I wouldn't need it. He said they did a GSR a bit before they did mine & they didn't need any either.

^it's pretty much felt that the installers would insert between the interior door panel & the window to prevent rubbing. Some people have had issues w/their tint getting scratched due to tightness between the door plastics & the glass. I have mostly heard this early on w/GSRs, but I haven't been keeping my eye on this issue w/other people lately.

So yeah... I found a long vertical scratch on my driver's window yesterday & am not happy about it. The installer reassured me that I wouldn't need moleskin when I asked about it. Now I'm not sure if it's under warranty, because the pamphlet doesn't mention anything of the sort. So moral of the story is get the moleskin/felt.

nopes, no scratching either. Had the tint for about 2 months now. The dealer removed/trimmed the inside liner so that it wouldn't touch the window.

ummm...ok I just got tinted today, NO moleskins. I like living dangerously. :D hahaha. Seriously though, do you guys wipe the inner window felt/rubber whenever you guys clean your car??? You'll be surprised at just how much gunk/dirt there is embedded in it. Don't forget to clean there...I'm gonna guess that those of you with SCRATCHES, (not just surface streaks) have gunk/dirt in the liner.

Guys, I installed the mole skin and It is something you can do at home with 1hr of time or less!!! REAL EASY DYI... Mine's done already but no camera :(

Step 1: Buy moleskin
Step 2: Roll the window down all the way
Step 3: Unscrew the 3 bolts on the doors you wish to install
Step 4: Take plastic off the door. Watch out front door is connected to the tweeter on top. May have to push UP to get it off
Step 5: Take the inside rubber piece off. (The piece the window went down to) It's rubber clip on so just take it off.
Step 6: Cut Moleskin in correct length and put it on. REMEMBER!!! There are 2 pieces on the plastic you need Moleskin. One on top and one on bottom. Just tape Moleskin into it from bottom. (Moleskin is not very sticky, but it works)
Step 7: Put plastic piece onto the door.
Step 8: Put door plastic off.. Don't forget the 3 clip on pieces to cover the screw

Then your tint should be scratch protected

I desperately need to replace the tint on my 4 windows, they're scratched to shit.
When I got my windows tinted, was when the X first came out and the scratching issue wasnt known. Now a year and a half later, my tint is toast.
But its a good excuse to get darker tint :)

I got my tints and had the shop install the felt. I just noticed this past weekend a 2-3" wide streak going up my whole window in the back. Sprayed and scrubbed the crap out of it but no luck. I guess even with the felt or moleskin you should be checking your windows. I dont know if its a scratch or if something fell in while the window was open then when rolled up it just dragged.

so what is this? is the felt not really needed? is it the quality of the tint that makes the difference?

flnsx
10-09-2009, 02:05 AM
The quality of the tint doesn't matter.

Take a look at your tint. You will start to see small vertical lines. You can feel them when you run your finger nail across them. They will start to get deeper and deeper until your tint looks like the picture at the link below.

This is what your tint will look like without the Tint Protector kit.

I have spent the last 3 years working for companies that require me to roll down my driver window 2 times per day to use a stupid RFID badge to actuate gates. Needless to say, I have enough scratches to show for it. Keeping your car clean isn't really going to do much however. All it takes is one time and there you have it. I am debating removing my tint altogether but after some posts I have read tonight, seems like the glass itself can get scratched without the tint in place. :confused2:

I looked into moleskin but on the other auto manufacturer forums there are tons of people still getting scratches and/or glue lines from the moleskin. So now I think I am just going to say fuck it and leave the tint on there to protect the windows. Funny part is I have never had this problem on any other car. My wife's Honda doesn't have moleskin and after 3 years not one single scratch, we roll down the windows almost every time it gets driven.

Moleskin, no matter how you apply it, will streak glue when it's hot out. I installed mine like a champ and still... glue streaks. The glue streaks don't end either. I have cleaned off the streaks with goo-gone at least 6 times since installation, and glue STILL comes out. It's like this thing is a glue factory.

The 2008 Lancer GTS has nice, felt-lined rubber strips. The 2008 Lancer Evolution X does not. Seriously, wtf. Country of origin? Regardless, wtf.

irmerm
12-29-2011, 04:43 AM
I believe the moleskin is an aftermarket product for use in place of factory felt for cars which don't have the felt equipped from the factory. Based on an earlier post in this thread, it looks like the 2011's may now have felt, where the 2008 did not. Not sure on the 2010.

Snakes709
12-29-2011, 05:09 AM
yea my 2011 has the felt, i wonder when they started that. When i went to get a quote for my tint the guy had to see if i had moleskin or not and then he said "oh, they put felt in" and told me how the tint gets scartched without it.

Assuming you purchased a quality tint film (not a 99cent film from Fambly Dollar) and have have it professionally installed, you shouldn't run into any issues. I have mines for a year now and no scratches whatsoever. If you see scratches, either your tint is dirty or the plastic contacts are dirty.
