I have been quiet about this enough. I am a performance guy, I love the sounds of just about all performance vehicles as much as the next guy.

However, when Mitsu and all the magazine reviews started stating that the new 4B11 has less NVH than the 4G63 I thought they were all smoking crack. I have had my X (GSR) for over 6 months and have put almost 12k miles on it.

There is no way in hell that this engine is any smoother than a 4G63 WITH BALANCE SHAFTS. It's considerable noisier and still has the same idle stumble as 4G63's. Yes, I know balance shafts were looked at with distrust. I currently have a 91 GVR4 with 130k miles on it with the original balance shafts. The X can never dream of the day it is as smooth as the GVR4. The sound that you hear in the cabin, I do not believe, is the raw motor/exhaust sound. I believe it to be a high-freqency harmonics that transfer motor vibration into the chassis/cabin.

While you do not "feel" alot of vibration in your feet, you ceratinly hear it. I also believe that is why alot of people "wish" they had a 6th gear. It's not because you'll get 1-2mpg better mileage, but because it would be a slightly more comfortable commute for all my commuters.

Once I get the power where I want it.... I will have to bump the power another 30hp just to compensate for the 50-100lbs of dynamat it's gonna need in on the firewall/floor.

well sir i could care less about cabin nosie lol an evo is an evo and if thats what you get thats it, but some plp dont feel the same way tho, but im sure the mr is a little better tho since the six gear is added but for like 5000 dollars or more no thank you but i just dont think the mr trnny can hold as much power as the gsr tranny, i just dont think it wont.

I didn't know vibration could be heard and not felt. I wouldn't be accusing other people of smoking crack if I were you.

I have owned both motors as well and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the 4B11 is a much smoother and overall better motor than the 4G63 IMO.

You can definitely hear vibrations...that's how the human ear works...

I do hear the injector noise...you should hear what that sounds like with a mechanics stethoscope. That is not the sound I am referring to.

I thought it was common knowlege that vibrations and sound are for the most part the same. everything that vibrates creates a sound, you may not hear it...but it creates a sound.

The sound I was referring to is not injector noise, I believe it to be belt or oil pump noise as it's loudest with a stethoscope on the oil pan.


I didn't say I couldn't stand the car or I would sell it...I was simply surprised by all the comments stating it's far more refined, quieter, and smoother than a 4g63. I don't agree. If you have the BS in, and new hydralic lifters, the 4g63 is much better on NVH.

My 1997 eclipse GSX with solid side motor mounts and inserted front/rear mounts, 272 cams, a 9lb flywheel, and a sheet metal intake(lets just say it doesn't like to idle that comfortably) only vibrates a tad more than my 1 month old evo X. Yes, my DSM still has its balance shafts. I feel a little better now that my X isn't the only one with the vibrations. I don't feel it as much when its moving with load on the motor, but a free rev in nuetral is very similar to my DSM. I keep telling myself its due to not having balance shafts. Hell, it doesn't really bother me, but it is quite noisy for a stock motor. I can't wait to get an exhaust system so it drones out everything else.

I can agree that the stock exo is quite other than the exception to the high impedance injectors ticking away. IMO, 4g63 not smoother on idle but is definately louder. Louder is better. Smoother is, well, smoother.
