So my coworker and I are big car guys...he more into drag racing and I prefer the handling of a car...hence why I'm HERE. ;) So I had a bright idea: go hash out our "differences" at VIR one day this spring/summer. I've never raced there (or on ANY real track TBH) and he had never HEARD of it. We both have drag racing experience (irrelevant) but I think I'm the only one that has done any "spirited" twisty type stuff since he prefers big power RWD cars (aka: straight line). Is this A) possible for two off the street guys to get a few laps in over there B) smart since we've never done this before and do it as a (truly) friendly competition type thing C) worth either of our time due to the competition aspect

Now the obvious question if the response gets this far is "what's he driving and what do you drive"

Him: 2004 SVT Cobra. Minor bolt ons (intake, exhaust, SC porting, pulleys, fuel pump etc), street tune, LOTS of rubber (315s on rear), minor suspension work; approx 650rwhp

Me: X SE, 100% stock power/suspension wise; would be running the stock Advans in stock size.

That he's VASTLY quicker/faster than me is not up for debate, I merely contend that my handling is on par with his power...I think I could keep up/beat him in a track environment.

Am I retarded? Either way I think it could be ALOT of fun...I've been wanting to do something like this anyway and VIR is (I believe) the closest track.

he will be faster on the straights but u will make that time up in the turns, just take the apex lines correctly and just be safe and have fun, no need for someone to wreck there cars over. Best advice i can give you is go on youtube, search that track and see how people take the turns.

summit point in wv is closer to you. last time i checked you really can't just go to vir or summit point and just start racing each other. you can do hpde and have an instructor with you. if i was you i would start small like an auto-x.

The cars are totally irrelevant. Totally driver dependent, ESPECIALLY if neither of you have experience. Do one track day and you'll understand.

Assuming your skills are totally equal (ie both novices), you probably have an advantage because the power on your car is less and more easily controllable.

My Roush has around 500whp and can't even hope to catch the Evo on the track. The Roush has very nice suspension and still is like a boat compared to the Evo. I'd say 5+ seconds a lap slower, maybe more.
