So, about US$34,200 (at today's rates of exchange) for my JDM EVO X GSR with 5MT and various accessories. That sounds downright affordable!

Very cool. I love how you have all of the audio system options in regards to speakers/head units/nav.

Wonder if we'll have those options here?

If only we can do that here in the Canada without worrying about the mark-ups

Mark-ups are not very common in Canada and I have only really seen it on models where the bigger dealers only get 1 or 2, like the Dodge Viper, etc. Seriously, if you get presented with a mark up then tell the salesperson you are in no rush and will wait, but that you are still interested and will buy when the price is right, and know what price that is, and be ready to buy.

I hope that equates right in the US market. It will probably go up a little.

You mentioned you are #20 on a pre-order list, but for which dealer? I do not think they will be getting 20 vehicles for the year. But if you are serious expect to move up the list.

Nah, I think you should call around and see how many deposits are taken and how many cars the dealer expects to get. Anyway, maybe someone else will not want the car and you will move up the list.

How many evo x's do you think Canada will get, then how many dealers are there, and do the math. Small markets will get fewer and large markets will get more, but even then I do not expect the Richmond, Vancouver, Toronto dealers to get more than a dozen cars each, and most likely less than that.

Did you want the 5MT or SST, and what colour do you want?

I am going to learn how to drive a stick soon, so either is fine. I am leaning towards SST though because of the BBS rims. If I can pick the BBS rims with GSR then that is cool too. I need to test drive both.

DAMN IT! should have done this earlierrr! I have to phone my sales tomorrow!

I learned to drive manual 19 years ago in an old Datsun wagon, and later improved my technique in a CRX, Tercel, Prelude, MINI Cooper and lastly a MINI Cooper S. I am at a point now where I want a fun car in which I am involved physically in the performance of the vehicle. I currently drive a CVT Escape Hybrid and, while it is a great vehicle, it is boring to drive. If I want video game style driving I'll play with my PS3.

I am also frugal, so I do not want to spend $1000's extra for something I may not want.

In your situation, just learning to drive manual, and potentially interested in the technology and performance enhancement of the SST, I think that you should think hard before choosing the manual.

In respect to people learning to drive manual, it is becoming a rare skill in younger people. I was surprised when I read that Danial Craig couldn't drive the stick shift Aston Martin in Casino Royale. Then again, with the advances in technology, it is looking like manuals have to give up the performance edge, whether in reality or in appearance. I still think it is a good idea to learn to drive stick as long as they are around, cause you can always drive both.

It is funny that manufacturers continue to offer base vehicles with manual. They get the benefit of advertising a lower price and then make extra profit when most people add the automatic transmission. However, I've also noticed that some vehicles, e.g., Chrysler 300, Magnum, Avenger, etc., only come with automatic transmissions.

It's your call. Just look at what you want, and imagine your daily routine. If an auto makes more sense to you, personally, then go for the SST.

I have felt pangs of doubt, but when I think about it, I would only really like the SST if it could provide a performance boost at the track, and most times I am not driving for lap times, just driving to push myself and my car, so I want to be involved. Plus, it comes back to money again...

Exactly. That's the key reason I started this forum. Many previous evo owners do nothing but talk smack on the X. I'd rather not hear their negative views on the car constantly, which is why we're here. Spread the word if you can.

well contrary to popular belief, i still think that alot of the X haters will change their mind towards the car when they see it in person.....Basically the same things are going on at NAGTROC too.... ALOT of people are playing the GT-R down now after the weight release.....there's always people that hate on new cars, because they're just too different.....

I mean, its ok to state your opinion, that is the excuse the haters use, but it gets annoying after a while, and besides, who like to hear smack about the car you are planning to get?

normally they hate because of paddle shift so why not buy a manual one and then they can't accept that evo x is faster in the corners. some of them they keep saying ugly cars etc.

I like my analogy I suggested in the other thread:

manual transmission = mechanical watch

SST = quartz watch

They both do the same thing, and relatively well. The quartz will keep slightly better time (+1 seconds per day for the best quartz versus +4 seconds per day for chronometer level mechanicals) and the mechanical needs to be wound or worn daily (for automatic mechanicals with self-winding rotor). Stop winding or wearing the watch (a problem if you have more than one automatic watch in your collection) and it stops keeping time, and date, and whatever other functions it may have. But you never need to replace a battery!

There is currently a resurgence in the popularity of mechanical watchs. Such Neaderthals, they should make their own wheels out of stone! :) :godance:

OK, I can see that some people do not like change, but I have not read one review where anyone said anything negative about the Lancer's or the Evolution's looks, unlike for the new Impreza where almost everyone has a hate-on for it.

I totally agree. I hear a lot of people say "it's growing on me" etc. But IMO, that just shows how biased they were from the get-go. The car didn't change...your perception of it did.

Me? I recognize awesomeness the moment I see it. :)

normally they hate because of paddle shift so why not buy a manual one and then they can't accept that evo x is faster in the corners. some of them they keep saying ugly cars etc.

Here are the biggest complaints I've heard abut the X from the evo 8 and 9 owners in general...

-"It's UGLY!" - This makes me wonder if they've ever looked at their own cars. This is analogous to Roseanne Barr calling Jessica Biel ugly. Verdict? Invalid point. Because they're wrong. :)

-"It's too heavy!" - Ok, they've got a valid point there. It's heavier than we'd all like it to be. Verdict: Yeah, the car can lose a few pounds. Shit happens when you add creature comforts.

-"No 4G63, No care / OMG it doesn't have a 4G63? I hate it!" - Seriously, get over yourselves. Yes, the 4G63 has been a popular motor over the past 20 years. "20 years" is the key phrase here. Mitsu has been long overdue for a replacement. They recognize the importance of making a good motor to replace the "almighty 4g63" (by almighty I mean the one with balance shafts, a too-long stroke, and the infamous crank walk). The fact is that, at least on paper, the 4B11T is lighter, more well designed, and makes more power. Verdict: Closed minded people hate change. The 4B11 is change. If it truly is the better motor (which seems likely), the only thing that is going to convince them is time.

-"It's slower" - Yes and no. Thanks to whiz-bang electronics and such, it's notably faster on any course that has turns. However, due to it's added weight, it is slightly slower in a straight line. Verdict: So what if it's a little slower in a straight line? Only a fool would use this excuse as a deal breaker. A few hundred bucks worth of mods will close that gap, which will only widen the gap of how much faster it is on a road course.

In general, previous evo owners seem to forget that this is an overall better car, and try to focus on the one or two things that the X isn't quite as good at - weight and acceleration, which go hand in hand, and are more easily fixable than the problems with the evo 8 and 9.

More 8 and 9 owners are starting to come around which is nice, but I think a lot of them who still hate the X just don't want to admit that it's a better car than what they own.

What I've noticed on EvoM:

"THE X SUCKS" = I can't afford it
"IT'S TOO HEAVY" = I can't afford it
"IT'S UGLY" = I can't afford it

Dino, it's not that they don't understand that it's a better car than what they own. It's that they are so upsidedown in their current cars that getting into a X is economically unfeasable. Thus... they can't afford it. But rather than settle for the wallet depleting truth, they need to bash on something to make themselves feel better. Ever heard the adage "Misery loves company"? It's no truer than on EvoM.

Haha. It's either that, or they just don't want to admit that the new car is better.

That certainly may be true for some. So they lie to themselves and pretend their VIII is better, so they don't feel so bad.

But rather than settle for the wallet depleting truth, they need to bash on something to make themselves feel better. Ever heard the adage "Misery loves company"? It's no truer than on EvoM.
