Which meter readings are most impt?

Understand its Boost, Volt, Oil temp,Water temp.

Any others i missed out? What's their importance?

Tks

For most people, boost and Air Fuel Ratio are all that is needed.

I will only be putting those in, when the time is right.

The others you listed aren't really needed as accessory gauges. Your car already has Water Temp.

For me, in order of importance - Wideband (a:f), boost, oil pressure, EGT

My rating: boost, AFR, EGT, oil temp

Ok. Now that I've seen it a few times:

Can you really do anything about EGT? I mean, if you have a gauge, and you're all tuned up, does knowing the temp help? Is there a particular automotive knowledge that can be gleaned from knowing that exhaust is hot?

I'm not saying it isn't important, I'm saying I know very little about performance cars. Enlighten me?

if your EGT stays too hot for long enough, your pistons most probably have holes in them

I would say the most important for me is A/F, Boost then oil pressure. Especially when you start modding your car. Being to lean from bolt ons might be a bad thing.

egt is very important, thats why most egt gauges are usually priced higher than the other gauges

well, you only know you are too lean if your EGT gets too high. As for oil pressure, the stock fool light works just fine.

I thought AFR was the way to determine if you're running too lean.

Is EGT a more accurate measure?

(And thanks for the replies)

Err sorry what does EGT mean? Its function?

I wonder if we have AF gauge here in Singapore? Any products you guys can recommend?

Thanks!

The whole point of gauges is to know when something is wrong on your car, before you blow an engine.

EGT stands for exhaust gas temperature. EGT and AFR gauges are both used as measurements to determine how hard an engine is running. The real killer in engine's is pre-detonation, which is caused by excessive combustion temperatures. Ignition temperatures can be lowered by running more gas (or boost, or timing, etc). Since you probably shouldn't be tuning your engine off of your gauges, they are really there as an "oh shit" measure. ie if your EGT temperatures suddenly shoot up, you know something is wrong and your engine is running dangerously close to blowing up. AFR readings are typically not very accurate (unless it's a wide-band AFR gauge), because they use the car's stock sensors. But they are still useful for determining when something is wrong with the car.

good explanation. Also it comes without saying that AFR gauge must be wideband. I was using AEM UEGO and can recommend it, but if you will be using some EBC or engine management system then get a compatible sensor.

Wow! That's useful info. No point in putting so many gauges w/o knowing whats important and their respective functions.

Car buffs in the US tend to know more technical engrg stuff. Some car owners here tend to go with the flow and put in so much stuff in their cars bcos it looks 'cool' only.

I'll try to source for a EGT and AF wideband gauge. I'm using an EBC(HKS EVC6) now.

Tks.

dont worry... there are plenty american "car guys" that add so much bull crap to their car because its the thing to do. idiots live everywhere.

yeah, lol those idiots are called ricers, i have always bought autometer and had great success with them chriz, but im really wanting to try th enew defi system, but do your own research and pick what you think you need and what you think is right for you

Thanks dudes... you guys rock

I'll be in US for a holiday late Oct. Be going LA, Vegas then San Francisco. So i plan to order some stuff and bring it home myself. There's lots to choose in the US. The tuner scene is very happening.

In Singapore, we're still waiting for more stuff for the X. Only a few items available.

I have a set of white Defi BF meters which seem to match the dash pretty well. NOt sure if I will use them or just sell them. There really isn't a good place to put them in this car. Anyone want a set?

Using a narrowband O2 sensor and AFR meter is basically useless. I had one in my VIII. It was good for telling me rich, stoich, and lean, that's about it. Nothing I already didn't know, basically.

Order of importance is the following according to Dsport:

All Motor
Tachometer
Oil Pressure
Water Temp
Fuel Pressure
A/F Ratio
EGT
Oil Temp
Votage
Vacuum
Manifold Air Temp

Forced Induction
Tachometer
Oil Pressure
Water Temp
Boost
Fuel Pressure
A/F Ratio
EGT
Oil Temp
Votage
Manifold Air Temp

Granted, our cars already have tachs, water temp, and oil pressure (warning indicator) gauges.

I have a wideband A/F gauge, boost, and EGT. I think that is all you need for now. I don't find any other gauges a necessity.

I usually keep it simple, uncluttered with just a boost guage... ( however there are guages out there that double for 2 or more functions..) like the pivot series.. so you get a 3 in 1 type function and you still have the uncluttered look.
