: First Mod should be...?
Having only driven 200 miles on the car, I was contemplating what should be the first mod to be installed on my Evo once it breaks in at 600+ miles. To be honest I am somewhat disappointed by the amount of power the car has produced thus far and I feel there is much more room for improvement.
So my question is, should I do the traditional upgrades such as intake/hot pipe (was thinking maybe buying the entire "Ingen Intake and UICP Set") first? or are there any other suggestions as being the first mod.
I would like to build this car for track, 1/4mile, and school/work purposes.
Any advice is appreciated.
Cheers,
Zan
exhaust intake hot pipe test pipe and tune
Any particular exhaust you suggest? Buschur?

AMS Exhaust
Don't want to sound like a sissy but considering living in Florida (which adopted the same strict laws as California on emissions) has anyone gotten caught for violating emissions law with a test pipe?
would really hate for the car to be impounded.
when you get emmisions done put the cat on. i dont have emmisions so i guess ive never worried about it
Yeah, I figured that is what I will have to do. Guess I will just AMS it out with a test pipe and single exhaust first.
Thanks Guys

Track days.
on2it 08-20-2008, 03:43 AM dont mod yet till youve run it in properly. but I agree with Robevo, intake, exhaust and tune.
Enjoitk 08-20-2008, 03:50 AM the biggest difference in performance for a first mod would be with an exhaust. but your power disappointment can easily be solved with a tune. its a night and day difference. but you need to mod your car first before you tune it.

Actually, from dyno testing, we've found that the overall biggest gainer is the intake. The exhaust does pick up some power, but not nearly as much as the bang-for-the-buck that the intake makes.
Enjoitk 08-20-2008, 05:23 AM Really? cause when i put my intake in i felt barely any difference, but when i got my tbe and put my stock intake back on to see which made more of a difference, it pulled like crazy
SpicyMchaggis 08-20-2008, 05:37 AM Since when does Florida have emissions? I ran cat-less for a 2 couple years when I lived in Orlando.

What kind of intake did you guys get that made a big difference??

Robevo 08-20-2008, 12:57 PM i dont know what they used , but my opinion is this.
If you will not get any exhaust then the example=AMS intake set up, is an overkill. You will not get the full benefit for it and you pay 3-4 times or even more to that intake.
But if you are planning to get an exhaust later, then i would go for the HKS drop on. $40 and below.
They say the Works is better , but cost at least twice as much, and you will throw it out anyway, when you get your intake with the exhaust later.
The big difference when you do only intake is not really the intake itself. It is the TUNE.
Sean tuned a BONE STOCK /not even drop in/ X and managed over 310 whp and 310 wtq /or something close/ on Dyno jet.
So the first biggest gain is the tune.
X-MAN 08-20-2008, 01:00 PM Get a tune.. learn the car.. then mode it.
Yeah...I just spoke with my local tune shop...(If anyone located in Miami wants to know the shop just PM me)...and they have an Evo X they have been working on now for a long time, they make their own test pipe, and single exhaust..(claimed that it produced 25hp to the wheels from stock) and they also provide an EcuTek tune for $700...which they said generated 325hp on a dynojet (once all the mods were in)...so I will probably check the quality of their test pipe and exhaust and open my options from there, before I get at a tune.
Appreciate the help
DVDee 08-20-2008, 06:50 PM Go for the tune, it'll really wake up the car. It will feel like what the Evo should've been from the factory.
are these ecutek tunes really that good? have most of you even had them done? mine will be done and put back on tomorrow so i guess i can wait and see for myself
You will see tomorrow. Totally different car. Just look at my dyno charts in the dyno forum.
so im guessing that you can feel a pretty good power gain then? what about the mpg

This has been on our site for some time (look at the clothing--it was still cold outside).
We went to an independent dyno and tested it on the prototypes (not even the finalized version as brackets and tabs had to be added to a lot of stuff, and we ended up changing a few things for the better).
This was tested on a car with <250 miles on it, so it wasn't even broken in yet as well.
Tests were done on a Dynojet.

Scroll down to Evo X Dyno Testing.
As you can see from the posting dates (not indicative of when it occured, but when it was added to the site) we picked up the car on February 21st, and had the parts built, tested, and the videos uploaded by March 2nd. :shades:

Man, I switched back and forth and I swear my stock intake runs better! I think the problem is most of these tuners like even AMS for some reason add the intake with the MBC at the same time...I have no clue why. Some of us wanna know the gains of the intake and not intake+MBC.

Did going back to the stock intake after the catback install make that much of a difference? I am thinking of trying this out. To me even in stock it seemed like the stock intake was kind of running better. Quicker spool and feel of torque.

so what was your first mod?

Could be because alot of them are open air elements and they're just sucking up hot air from under the engine bay.
I hear good things about the AEM intake along with the release of Blitz's new intake. Both used the factory type style of separating the filter from the under hood heat soak.
I installed the Harman Motive Intake...There is a huge performance increase....I can hear the spoolage MUCH more and the Blow off. Planning to order the Harman Motive Turboback System...and see when I can install that..
