T.I. To Remain Jailed On Weapons Charges
T.I.

October 15, 2007, 4:20 PM ET

T.I. was ordered today (Oct. 15) to remain in custody on federal weapons charges until a bail hearing later this week.

The chart-topping rapper was arrested Saturday, hours before his scheduled performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta. Federal authorities say he tried to buy three machine guns and two silencers from a man cooperating with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

T.I., born Clifford Harris, appeared briefly in federal court today. Wearing a black shirt and black jeans, he entered the courtroom expressionless and scanned the crowd filled with family, supporters and media.

The government wants to keep the 27-year-old rapper in custody as the case proceeds, but his attorneys planned to argue for his release on bond at a hearing scheduled for Friday.

A federal firearms dealer contacted the ATF this month about a man seeking to buy a machine gun without registering the weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

After attempting to purchase several machine guns from an undercover ATF agent, the unnamed individual -- who said he had been a bodyguard for T.I. since July 2007 -- was arrested. He began cooperating with the government and said that he was buying the machine guns and silencers for Harris, a convicted felon, the complaint said.

My guess is that as a convicted felon he could not purchase the weapons, so he was trying to get his bodyguard to do it for him.

Trying to buy machine guns. Since machine guns are such a common purchase for people, it would go un-noticed when buying them on a street corner.

A convicted felon trying to buy machine guns...yeah, that's even smarter.

T.I. Pleads Not Guilty To Weapons Charges

Rapper T.I. pleaded not guilty to a trio of illegal weapons charges today (Oct. 19) in Atlanta and was ordered to be held in custody for another week by a judge who said he would consider releasing him on bond.

Federal agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested the rapper in Atlanta on Saturday, the day he was due to have appeared at the BET Hip-Hop Awards.

They said the arrest came as he took delivery of three machine guns and two silencers that a bodyguard purchased on his behalf. T.I., born Clifford Harris, was convicted of a drug offense in 1998 and is prohibited from owning or buying firearms.

T.I.'s lawyers were seeking today to have him released on a $2.2 million bond and subject to electronic monitoring and home confinement. "I haven't decided that I am going to release him yet. What I am contemplating is looking at everything as a (bond) package," said Judge Alan Baverman.

"I am going to direct that he be detained subject to a continuation of this hearing," he said, referring to another court appearance for the rapper set for next Friday.
