So recently a revelation came to me. I'm in a new relationship, that's long distance. When i met her in r/l for the first time (BTW, she far exceeded my expectations..) I gave her flowers. Nothing fancy, just a bouquet of gerbera daisies. Well, I got lots of bonus points because she said she's never ever gotten flowers before(she's 33).

I talked to some of my female friends, and they all seem to re-inforce the notion that getting flowers is rare. I thought it was universaly known that girls like flowers. I mean, I send flowers to my female friends for birthdays, etc, so to me I never thought anything about it. I never thought that I was striking a gold mine.

As far as the excuse: it's a waste of money because they just wilt. Well, poppy-cock. A simple bouquet is like $20-30. I don't really see what's so special, but I'm a guy.

Guys, do it for the ladies, they'll really like it for some reason.

Flowers are nice to give, but I agree that once you give flowers there is an expectation to keep giving, and should you forget for a particular situation or occassion, there may be hell to pay. Other small but thoughtful gifts can work, too, like a small box of expensive chocolates, or a two-four of her favourite brew (I love Canadian girls).

When I was with Christy, very early on, I had my neighbors (owned a floral shop) put together a silk arrangement of all of her favorite flowers (which was rather hard to get that info), as well as her favorite colors. My explanation for getting those was that they will never die, and at any point she can look over at them and think of us. It got me mad bonus points. Of course I bought the real flowers randomly and for important days. But the silk ones were right next to her bed, all the way up to the day I left. I ran into her mom a few weeks ago at the store and she told me that the flowers are still where they were when I left.
