: TPMS reprogramming required for new tires?
verkion 10-31-2008, 06:25 PM Hi guys,
Just wanted to know whether its necessary to have the TPMS reprogrammed each time I get new tires. I would have figured it'd be fine without since the tire pressure would more or less be the same right?

You can just swap the sensors right over.

I'm assuming this is the same thing if I keep my stock rims and just put new rubber on it. Oh, one other thing...do the tire-stems have to be changed too? Or are they all integrated into the TMPS and can't be changed? I'm getting 2 different stories on this...tire place A says no need to change, it's integrated. Costco says, we have nickel plated ones that we swap in everytime they do a tire swap that has TPMS.
Thanks for the quick reply!!!

dakoop 10-31-2008, 06:46 PM It is a sensor/stem combo. Every time the tires are changed there are rubber gaskets, nickel valve core and a sealed valve stem cap that need to be replaced. The sensor is re used unless it breaks. Make sure to keep valve caps on otherwise the nickel valve core will corrode into the sensor.
verkion 10-31-2008, 06:48 PM :-) Thanks for the info! You guys are the best!

macPSU 10-31-2008, 07:04 PM Good info, I've been looking to find this out for a while. Definitely don't want to have to go to the dealer with all of my mods.
dakoop 10-31-2008, 07:07 PM Even if a sensor needs to be programmed any good tire shop should have the equipment to reprogram the sensor.
verkion 10-31-2008, 08:10 PM Yes...that is very true that they have the equipment. Except that, they want to charge $35 just to reprogram it. I just want to know whether I actually need to have it done, or whether I can save $35, (and whether the tireshop is BS'ing me).

Tireshop is BSing you. I got mine swapped from stock rims to aftermarket and they work just fine.
dakoop 10-31-2008, 08:14 PM It shouldn't need to be reset unless you replace a sensor.
beetle_orange 10-31-2008, 09:22 PM i just talked to discount tire about this and they said the reprogramming is free as long as the tool they have works, if not then they said i have to go to the dealership.
Deepseadiver 11-01-2008, 06:12 AM OK! so I had to take it to the dealership and they want $79.00 to reprogram the sensors! Dose that sound right?? what is everyone else paying?
dakoop 11-01-2008, 01:11 PM Why are you reprogramming? Did you replace a sensor? If not no need to reprogram.
maverick_124 11-01-2008, 01:32 PM the 4 OEM sensors will reprogram them self's into there new spots on the car.
unless you break a sensor and change it there is no need to reprogram anything
ikuto 11-02-2008, 02:22 AM Yes, a re-program is not needed if you are using your existing TPMS sensors from your OE wheels to aftermarket wheels. :godance:
Deepseadiver 11-02-2008, 03:48 AM I went with new rims, tires, and sensors. Yes they need to be reprogramed. All I was asking is how much are people paying. I went to the dealership and they wanted $79.00 dollars. I got them from TireRack and was told that they are OEM new sensors, again they need to be reprogramed.

Are you having the dealer reprogram them? I'm curious if there are any other options besides that...
Deepseadiver 11-02-2008, 04:05 AM that is what I am triing to find out. In Guam my options are limited. Only one Mitsubishi Dealership. I looked up price of the MUT-3 scan tool, and it is going for $4,000 on E-bay.
Deepseadiver 11-02-2008, 04:07 AM I was thinking it might be cheaper to have the old tires removed off the OEM wheels and then swap over the old OEM sensors to the New aftermarket rims. So it would be removing eight tires and then remount 4 tires.
maverick_124 11-02-2008, 10:29 AM you only have to remove 1/2 the tire to get the sensor out

I asked my dealership before they said it should be a 30min job and it's about $40. It depends on the dealer I guess if they are nice or not?
Deepseadiver 11-02-2008, 12:30 PM you only have to remove 1/2 the tire to get the sensor out
OOOO! that would be so much cheaper!
