So about six months ago, I decided that it's been too long since I was doing any kind of routine exercise. It wasn't enough of a priority for me to spend an hour or two every day in the gym, so I decided to start doing pull ups every work day since it was quick and tough.

So about four days a week I (occasionally along with a co-worker or two) head down to the gym in our building for about 10 minutes. I'd typically do three sets of pull ups (or sometimes dips), doing as many as I can each set until I fail.

Recently, I've noticed that I'm getting a little more endurance, but I wasn't making huge gains. On a good day, I can knock out 16 pull ups in a single set, but I'm having trouble getting past that point. This prompted me to pick up a weighted dip belt, which is basically a weight belt with a chain on it that you can attach extra weights to:

http://i.b5z.net/i/u/230085/i/dipping_belt_dip_belts_parallel_weight_lifting_belt_t_ezr.jpg

Needless to say, doing pull ups and dips with this on slows you down quite a bit.

With my own body weight (~180lbs), my three sets on an average day would be around 14, 12, and 9 reps or so for my three sets.

Today, my second time doing pull ups with this, I did a set with 50lbs hanging from my waist (@ 5 reps), the second set with 25lbs (@ ~9 reps) and the final set with no exta weight (@ ~12 reps).

Anyway, I've been meaning to log my progress somewhere, so I figured this would be a decent place to do it.

Anyone else wanna join the madness and start doing daily pull-ups?

I'm in. (maybe)

I need to watch myself when it comes to these kind of things. Right now I'm doing a daily exercise by riding (work) and this might kind of throw me off since it's *daily*. I might get lazy here-and-there. Another thing I need to look out for is bulk. I can't say it enough, when I workout the muscles pack on me like no other and I need to avoid that in any which way that I can. I'm at a good weight right now and if these pull-ups are going to eph that up I'm leaving you in the dust. <3

Haha, I found a rather perfect picture for this thread, enjoy.

Try extending you legs straight out in front of your for 8-10 reps. Great core workout in addition to everything else.

Bah. I used to do that when I did track.

I swear, the weakest thing on my body are my arms. I can never build those things quiet the way I want them to. My legs, oh man, I could take Hulk Hogan down with my legs without a problem. My stomach is rather muscular but I want more definition in it.

..basically, I want to look like Jessica Beil. She is soooooo hoooooot *masturbates*

On the pull up bar?

On the one here, there's no room to.

I really should get in on this. Perhaps I shall. Sounds good to me.

After arm wrastlin' with you, I could definitely say you're stronger than some dudes i know. Not weak by any stretch (relative to your weight, at least).

That said - go ahead and do pull ups, just don't do weighted ones.

FWIW, I've gained no weight since I started doing this, I'm just a little stronger, have more endurance, and maybe better definition.

Today I did the wide grip "overhand" pull ups. An extra 50lbs on that was damn near impossible...I banged out 2 or 3 tops. I did alright with 25lbs extra and my own weight though.

I'm in the last week of P90X...if you haven't seen the commercials it's an intense 90 day in home "boot camp"...lots of push ups, pulls ups...mainly body weight resistance training...in a given resistance week, I would say I average over 300 or so pull ups/chin ups...wide grip, switch grip (switch between regular chin up grip and regular pull up grip every 2 reps), corn cob pull ups, towel pull ups...regular grip chin and pull ups, close grip...if anybody has thought about P90X I highly recommend it...it's all about the muscle confusion...I've lost 25 lbs and about 6 inches off my waist in 90 days...

ok, as I promised...here are some before and after photos of me...this is using P90X...an extreme in home 90 day workout...I played 4 years of collegiate soccer...and after my senior season last year, I just let myself go...I stopped working out and just kept eating bad and drinking all the time...so I decided to do something about...and I have to say, after doing this program, I'm in the best shape of my life...I know it's sounds like an informercial...but the program really works...

so day 1 obviously...

I still can't get over the results...it's crazy to think that I looked like that 90 days ago...so I definitely reccommend the program...it's 12 dvd's, a workout booklet, a nutrition guide (tells you exactly what to eat and when to eat it...and the food is awesome), a workout calender...the only thing you need is a chin up bar, dumbbells or resistence bands...check out p90x.com for more information!

Right on, man!

How much time did you spend a day working out?

It sounds like you ate good foods, but was it inconvenient to follow the diet schedule?

In other news, I did weighted dips today. 50lbs, 25lbs, and then my body weight. That 50lb set was a tough one. The only thing I don't like about the weighted dips is that the weight tends to start swinging around after awhile.

PS - what was your before/after weight? And how tall are you?

it was actually really easy to follow the diet...I've done high protein low fat diets before...so this wasn't really too far of a stretch...the first month was kinda tough cause it's designed to get rid of all the fat...the only fats I was getting was from string cheese, and nuts (cashews and pistachios)...the workouts are an hour a day...which is long for resistance training (imo)...but now I can't imagine working out for less than an hour...

and when I weighed myself day 1...I was 215 lbs...day 90 I was 190 lbs...so 25 lbs...but muscle weighs more than fat, of course, so it should be noted that I lost 6-7 inches from my waist...so I'm very pleased with my overall experience with the program...

Fuck no. But I may integrate short "veggie fasts" into my diet here and there to detox my body, more or less.

Nah, that's not the idea.

Basically I'd like to go a day or two here or there without ingesting weird chemicals and crap that we typically find in our foods.

The other day I was able to do 1.5 pull ups with 85lbs hanging from my waist.

Today, I went to attempt more, but the chain isn't long enough to hold anymore weight.

So I gotta get a 100lb girl to hang on my back while I do some.

PUC today...

2 reps @ 99lbs - to accomplish this, i put 3x25lbs on my weight belt, and I put 2x12lb weights in my pockets.

3.5 reps @ 75lbs (which felt light by comparison)

5 reps @ 50lbs

Kooldino

Had a good run today.

With no added weight, I did 17, 14, and 10 reps. 41 total reps in 3 sets.
