Ok.

I have been from program to damn program trying to get this crap to work. I keep on getting a error on my phone when it comes to downloading a .exe file to teh PPC. I get the "This file is not a valid Pocket PC file" or some crap and it's REALLY irritating me.

Nothing is leading me to a solution, help!

Here is where I have been so far:

http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=225177
http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html

I'm trying just about every program even if it doesn't apply to my phone because apparently the ones that even do apply aren't wanting to work out. I remember having this problem on my previous phone (PPC6700) and somehow I got passed it but I don't remember how. My patience is running dry due to various reasons and I don't feel like spending half the night trying to get a damn program working on my phone.

If anyone has a quick fix, just let me know..

Oh. And the HowardForums.

I think I'm just going to post a thread over there..

I'm a whore on howardforums too.. rob actually found me in a thread on there, it was too good ;)

this was the thread in question: http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1266654

could you post an example app? Almost any app I used on my HTC Kaiser was packaged as a cab file that installed via the phone. I had a couple .exe files, the ones I remember being the PHM Registry Editor and an advanced task manager.

How are you getting these .exe files to the phone? Are you sure they aren't desktop windows .exe files (i.e. does it give a similar error when you try to run on a desktop)?

Are you using Vista (it throws a wrench into so many things that worked just fine before)?

What is the phone in question? Is it a new WM6 phone?

p.s. .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ is the place to be for ppc info.

al;skhq;lerhga I need sleep but I can continue this discussion sometime tomorrow afternoon.

edit: wait I see the apps you're trying to install there.. hmm I'll have to play around tomorrow.

edit2: a lot of software for PPC that is packaged as an exe is meant to be run on the desktop, where it extracts some files and then pops up the activesync app installer (called something different in vista but it's definitely the same program).. next time you sync the phone, the app is installed.

looking at that aol.co.uk link.. that is an old as shit aim client.

I never used an aim client on my Kaiser though.. just google talk, windows live messenger, and skype. I know I did read a big roundup of IM clients though.. the official AIM client was pretty much garbage according to that.

am I too computer stupid to get a smartphone??

depends :P

Is it Windows Mobile Standard (no touchscreen, 'smartphone edition')or Windows Mobile Professional (touchscreen, pocketpc)

professional is an f-ing clusterfuck, seriously. There's no excuse for a mobile OS being so fragmented and not user friendly.

Thank you.

I have the clusterfuck. You are totally right. I'm missing so many things on the today screen it's unreal. I can't even see the battery power.. :(

should give you a battery meter (among other things, and assuming it works). that was bothering me too, had to go into settings to see how much battery i had left

i was also dissatisfied with my homescreen until i installed the kansei recommended HTC homescreen. way better. now it looks more like this
http://www.pocketemu.com/images/10snaps/before.png

but with my calendar appointments below. from that screen the icons just below the clock gives you access to text, email and phone. just below those are like tabs which change that whole top section. you have weather, favorite people, customizable program shortcuts, music, and phone mode (silent, vibrate, etc...). so far i've enjoyed my clusterfuck version

looks even better on the phone cause you can apply different themes and stuff to change colors, clock appearance, icon appearance, all kinds of fun stuff. the one there is the default one which is on the boring side. if i knew how to take a screen shot of mine i'd post it up

Jared --on the HTC Tilt rom there's a battery meter where the clock is in that screenshot you posted.

you can't deny it's a clusterfuck though. go change your ringtone.. I dare you. record the number of clicks/taps required :P

SPB Mobile.

(or sbp)

it's way nice but yeah.. the HTC today screen plugin gives you quite a bit of the functionality for free.

after i installed that thing i posted last night (similar to Kaisertweak from what i hear) the battery meter magically appeared. that thing also opened up some other cool stuff and if i leave it running it gives me a task bar across the bottom that i can add shortcuts to as well as a battery meter that shows percentage instead of just bars

I dare you. record the number of clicks/taps required :P
2 with the HTC homescreen. 1 to switch to the "Sound" screen they list there, another on the name of the ringtone that's displayed on that screen which brings you directly to the ringtone changing screen

3 the normal way. Start->Settings->Phone

on the whole i find windows mobile pretty easy to get around in, especially with the touch screen
