I have the same problem....so what I do is shift into first, then third, then into Reverse....because I think reverse uses both the 1st and 3rd gear.

This is not uncommon in a manual trans.

My old mitsu used to be like this... no probs with my X so far. Just run through other gears and clutch in and out a few times... usually works.

I don't know if anyone has noticed or tried but when I have reverse issues like this I tried backing the clutch peddle ~1/2 inch and it then goes in smooth as a ever. It might be due to alloy expansion when cold or settled.

sycromesh for reverse is 3rd and 5th, so instead of going to 1st then reverse, go 3rd to reverse, drops in like butter

anyone have it pop out of reverse back into neutral? Its happened to me twice but I think its because I thought it was in reverse on a cold start but I could be wrong, hope its not a tranny issue.

Yup this usually works. Try putting it in reverse, back to neutral, release the clutch and try again. Works every time for me.

did it make grinding sound when it popped out of reverse back into neutral? if it did, it seems to be a issue on a cold start...

I have the same problem. why does this happen? I had a 350z and never had issues like this. it was notchy but never had a problem going into reverse.

maybe pumping the clutch willdo the trick. If not, take it in to Mitsu

It happends cuz our transmission is a sh&tty design. It is strong as I understand but it shifts like %hit and its notchy, reverse and 1st are hard to get into at times and its not a 6 spd.

In Canada, I know for sure Mitsu is looking for a fix as we speak but no fix bulletin out yet. We just goota live with it for now.

I really appreciate this thread. I've had the same issue since car was new in June 09. Even returned it to dealer where they pulled the tranny and replaced all reverse gear synchros and components. Still does it, but not quite as badly. I'll definitely do the 3rd to reverse drill from now on. This is a real weak link in an otherwise awesome vehicle.

not trying to pick a fight, but I'm pretty sure you are wrong. I'm pretty sure it's first and 3rd.

However too lazy to look it up. anyone got any links to the articles or technical data that describes how reverse works. It's actually pretty fascinating, wouldn't mind a refresher.

Anyway, i just push it up into first then back down and into reverse and it goes in fine. It's normal though and is the one thing that doesn't seem to be going away. The grinding through shifts disappeared after about 10k miles.

EDIT
Found this:

From Mitsu's Press release:

New Compact Manual Transmission for Evolution GSR
The 2008 Lancer Evolution GSR debuts a new 5-speed manual transmission (W5M6A) that provides a higher torque capacity than the 5-speed manual transmission used in the previous-generation Evolution models. The new transmission is also six millimeters shorter than the previous 5-speed and the same as the 6-speed used before.

Enabling higher torque capacity requires greater gear face width, which would then result in to a longer transmission case. To make the room needed without lengthening the case, the W5M6A manual deletes a dedicated Reverse gear. Instead, Reverse is provided by meshing 1st and 3rd gears, with synchromesh used to a synchronize the idler gears that mesh them.

The 5-speed manual transmission uses triple synchros on 1st and 2nd gears and a double synchro on 3rd. The new transmission adds double synchros on 4th and 5th, compared to single synchros on the previous transmissions, to enhance durability when used on high-speed tracks, for example. A new ball-type synchro key is used, as well.
