: GSR or MR????

Hi guys! I'm new in this forum. I'm still a college student and I'm transferring to Boston from LA. Since I'm moving, I've persuaded my dad (whos also an avid car enthusiast) to cover the price difference once I sell my old car.

Now with buying power aside, I am torn between the GSR and the MR. I know this has been debated thousands of times, but I still want some honest opinion on which I should choose.

I want the MR just for its manul transmission gear box, but the GSR is appealing since it has a dual-clutch sst which sounds like a boost on performance.

I do not care about traffic congestions with gear boxes. I live in LA with a stick-shift, so I can live with the whole torment. The only let-down with the GSR is that it's a 5 gear manual, not a 6.

The SST sounds like a good idea to capture the Evo X at its full potential, but the thing is that it's missing a clutch.

Please enlighten me with your knowledge and opinion, I'm torn apart by this GSR/MR dilemma! :props:

It is the other way around :)

MR has SST while GSR has 5MT!

MR has leather and all the gadgetry, while GSR has a pretty bland interior to be honest.

I like MR for blistine suspension, eibech spring, better brakes, BBS rims and SST. Overall, I think it is a better looking car than the GSR.

GSR, on the other hand, has a lot more aftermarket potential, HKS and arc already has some goodies made for the GSR.

So it really depends on your needs. Ultimately, for me, I have to see how SST performs when stacked against the MR.

P.S. You from hong kong? cause I am!

Thx for the info, and yes I came from Hong Kong. You name was a dead giveaway lol, "gor".

Anyways if I do get the Evo X, I'll probably do some light tuning like intakes and stuff, nothing big. So yeah, I really have to see how much the aftermarket can do with the sst.

Yeah, the SST is a big question mark for everyone right now. Personally, I want the MR and everything about it, however, I wish I could get it with the 5MT this time around just so they can work out any bugs from the SST box.

Also, the upgraded suspension in the MR isn't that big of deal to me, because I'll likely lower the car anyway.

Gotta say though, the GSR wheels are trash, but I love the MR wheels.

33-35k for GSR, 35-40k for MR.

from a PERFORMANCE MODIFICATION stand point:
if you want to modify any further than a cat back and a cold air intake (maybe a mild tune) then get a GSR.

yep!!! Mr will never be good for tuning bc it will get destroyed by torque!!! Maybe by time evo 12 comes out they will be durable enough but until then stick with gsr. MR is an expensive mistake!

The rest of the guys pretty much cover the points.

However, should you finally made up your mind, I recommended that you get the WW, to match with your helmet & suit (refer to your avatar). :D

Definitely GSR. It's so much more fun to row your own gears and doesn't have that cap on power potential like the MR. Not to mention a LOT cheaper to fix if something does go wrong and the interior is pretty much the same. I don't really see why people complain about the interior. I got the NAV and put in the bluetooth and audio controls on the steering wheel. Looks great to me and everything is right where it should be. I prefer the cloth seats and the other stuff? You can get coilovers, set of wheels and some new rotors with the money you save buying the GSR.

What bugs?

Some people have experienced the overheating issue and a few other small things but nothing serious. In truth for a first generation unit it has been very good.

I decided to go with the GSR and am very happy with my purchase. Sometimes I wish I had a tall 6th gear for cruising but it isn't that bad, the MRs gearing is shorter from 1-5 and its 6th gear isn't too much taller than the GSR's 5th so the cruising RPMs are a bit lower but not by much.

I think the SST is great. These automated manual transmissions should replace all the torque converter type trannys in the next few years. They are lighter, handle power much better and have less drivetrain loss while being just as much fun as a true manual. All the while you can just slip it into D and putter about town without any clutch in clutch out worries. Come on, perfectly blipped down shifts, I can only imagine how addicting that must be.

Both cars are good, you can equip them with all the same gadgets so that isn't a difference. The major differences between the cars are the added sound insulation, softer suspension (not a bad thing) and SST. Little things like body colored this and that are trivial.

At the end of the day they are both Evos and should be enjoyed as such.

I am just curious as to the harsh comments such as "SST sucks" or in another thread "SST is gay".

Sometimes it is starting to feel more and more like EvoM on here. :(

^I agree Kimi those comments are not very well thought and display immaturity at its best. Go drive both cars then pick one or make a list of must haves in a car then pick one, but stay off other peoples choices. It really does not help the community to say X brand sucks. Such extreme statements make me skip of those post anyway. They scream fanboy, il education, or just plane lack of maturity. Neither MR or GSR are even near perfect cars. You can say you prefer X over Z due to Y reason, but that is about it. The gay staements do nothing for anyone, but annoy.

I thought that those affected cars were pre-production units. I could be wrong.

You should be!

It’s like sex. Well not really… But the downshifts are my FAVORITE. When I’m in sport-mode and downshift a few times (to come to a stop), people snap their heads to have a look. They have an expression like “what the hell is that?”. The downshifts in Sport or Super-Sport mode sound super serious.

The only functional differences between the two are the transmissions. The rest of the stuff is cosmetic. Well maybe the front brakes. And like you said the sound insulation is nice.
At the end of the day they are both Evos and should be enjoyed as such.
+1

People who respond like that have issues. Either that or they still have yet to grow-up.

I went back and forth on the GSR vs MR thang, and I've decided on the GSR. Because of the cheaper price and I dig the 5MT.

Spoonie,

I'm like 15 minutes away from Rockland. You better watch out now, I might steal your car one of these days for a joy ride to have some fun with that SST! No worries I will leave my GSR in its place if you need to go pick up milk or something, LOL.

Have you ran the Bear Mountain Goat Path yet?

That's cool. I may have been on that road on my motorcycle and didn't know the name. If not I'll find it. Is it close to that peak? there are some real nice roads there (by 7 lakes drive) but the last time I went during the summer the roads were in need of a paving job :-(

It is the road if you make a right, after going over the bridge from the park side. It is cleverly named, Bear Mountain Bridge Road (Route 202 or Route 6). It is lined by a cliff pretty much the entire way, it reminds me a lot of the Corsica Rally. It is great for scaring the crap out of an unsuspecting passenger.

Back to the topic, has anyone developed a clutch kit or upgrade for the SST yet? I know Vishnu has some reprogramming for it but as far as hardware I have not heard anything.

Thanks!! I'll give it a shot over the weekend (weather permitting). As far as the clutch-kit? I've yet to hear anything. I'm scared about the reprogramming and warranty issues. The most I'll do to my car under warranty is an Air-filter (K&N) and an exhaust (still not sure about that).

LOL, I think they did a good job of it back in November '07 with whatever info they had. Someone just happened to bring it back to life today.
