hurricane sandy! 87 octane! Oh boy!

I was forced to fill about 5 gallons of 87 octane today because where i was they were out...i always fill wit 93 and was not on empty should i be worried about knocks and harming the motor? I drove for about 80 miles then out another 5 gallons of 93 in and octane booster. Am i being anal?

Our cars have a low octane map just for this so don't worry, if you're that nervous just don't hammer on it... On a side note all the gas stations I've gone to since Saturday have all been out of 87 because of the hurricane... weird. Still plenty of e-85 though

If you don't boost, you could run 87 exclusively, forever. But then you should consider just getting a base Lancer at that point

Ummm. I'd never put 87 in my car without following it up with some real octane booster, and a lot of it.... I don't give a shit what "Maps" our car has. Your car is probably knocking like crazy right now. The way it moves to the "low octane map" is by detecting massive amounts of knock. Guess what though, some of the tuners out there, I'm not naming any names, make the high octane and low octane maps the same, effectively making the low octane map worthless and preventing your car from learning about bad fuel and pulling timing in the intended manner. I'd baby the hell out of the car, completely stay out of boost, and go pour in an octane booster (a real one, like the Lucas "real" octane booster - most octane boosters are worthless garbage but the lucas one is actually good). Then mix in 93 as soon as humanly possible.

If your car is tuned on 93, you should never, ever, run anything other than 93. You don't know what type of assumptions your tuner was making about your fueling choices, which is why it's imperative to always run the correct fuel after a tune. The stock car can take shitty ACN 91 or 93 and will work fine, but a car boosting higher thats tuned at more timing at part throttle and even at cruise running 87 octane is a recipe for bad news. Then you consider that some tuners decide to make the low octane map the same as the high octane map, you've got a recipe for even part throttle trouble.

That being said, if you completely stay out of boost you'll probably be fine, but just "not going WOT" isn't good enough. Don't boost AT ALL. Always better safe than sorry.
