It's more of an alliance than an acquisition or hostile takeover. Nissan was bailed out in a similar fashion by Renault and Nissan is also looking into having more of a presence in southeast Asia.

Mitsubishi just isn't an exciting brand right now. You see all car manufacturers having a high end car to get people excited about the brand.

Maybe get into the hybrid game? They have an EV option but no hybrid. If they can make a competitive hybrid vehicle that comes under the Prius it may help their automotive department.

It's hard for an independent to survive in the american market. The only one doing awesome to my knowledge is subaru and that's because they have that niche awd thing going for them. Mazda did well because of the rotary but that fame is falling away, they survive only because they make the best damn cheap cars. Mitsu would need something special to keep them in the market.
