I expressly do NOT want to stir the pot, don't want name calling, none of it. If you include your tuner's name, you better have concrete evidence of exactly WHAT was done wrong.

YEAR/MODEL/MODS/MILES/WHAT happened/WHY it happened

Xenozx
- '10 GSR 25k miles. FP Green/all bolt ons. 375tq

-Cause: low oil due to improper change caused bent rod.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

newcomer81 - FP Red/meth. 10k miles on stock turbo, another 9k on the Red although it was only the last few hundred miles i pushed the red to the point of making that much tq.

-Cause: FAR too much wheel torque for stock block (425awtq est)

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Mazzab - '10 SE. 20k miles. Intake, UICP, 3-port, HFC/CBE,

-Cause: Overboost issues, opening clutch packs

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Murlo - '08 GSR. E85 stock block, FP Red, MX1 came, all bolts minus LICP/DP. Threw a rod with 500awhp/460awq 33psi.

Motor #1
: Above power levels, too much power on stock block.
Motor #2: Built 2.0, JE pistons, Manley TT Rods, Cosworth bearings. FP Black, GSC S2 Cams, MAP long runner header 38psi. Spun rod bearing #4. Lasted 3k miles. ""Thoughts on built motor, probably too much peak torque timing, running a bit lean and the number 4 one was prolly running leaner yet. I didn't log/monitor anything really, partially my fault for sure."

------------------------------------------------------------------

justin81
- '10 GSR. 30k miles. Full boltons, stock block, protune @ 340/360tq.

-Cause: Not sure. Found #2 & #4 spark plug ceramic broken and slipped over electrode causing misfire in both cylinders. Melted #4 piston.

------------------------------------------------------------------

2snail - '10 GSR. Cosworth drop-in, High Flow Cat, Grimmspeed 3 port. Tuned with peak 27.5 psi 312whp and 321wtq

-Cause: The car bent the gap closed on cyl#4 and I had a p0304, I replaced all 4 plugs. I believe the tune was too aggressive for almost stock setup.

------------------------------------------------------------------

legendary wraps - '08 MR

Motor #1 - stock, bad injector - kaboom cylinder #3
Motor #2 - built 2.0, dropped valve -ugly cylinder #3 and trashed head

I think its been decided that you need to when necessary to downshift. I've changed my whole driving style since hearing about all the blow ups. Kinda getting ridiculous!
What does this mean? I dont understand the sentence. Down shift when necessary?

#3 ·
I say include a reader's digest of mods, just listing the biggest power mods. If you really wanna stir the pot, include the tuner.

#4 · (Edited)
Continue from post #1. See post 1 for overall analysis though.

-----------------------------------------------------------
B^t - FP Black on Stock Blk - 3000miles... 400whp - Piston 4 crack...

-----------------------------------------------------------

evox 4x4 - 63,xxx kms daily driven evo x. FP Red/stock block

Aside from that I agree.
hehe, I figured. Good to include that guidance on naming the tuner so this thread doesn't turn into a mudslinging affair.

all the normal supporting mods short of the block, fp red and meth. 10k miles on stock turbo, another ~9k on the red although it was only the last few hundred miles i pushed the red to the point of making that much tq.

short of some of the SST guys having their trannys disengage early on i think the vast majority of us just pushed the stock block up around the 400tq+- mark and ended up in a high load low rpm situation and the rods gave way.

FP green, all bolt ons, 375 torque Ivey Tuned. 25000 miles

Engine Failure cause: bent rod # 4 cyl. Cause, oil leak, from bad oil change, was down to about 2 quarts of oil.

#11 · (Edited)
stock engine cat back, dropin filter and uicp running with a bad fuel pump relay. my wideband told me i was hitting close to 16afr in boost for a couple months before the spark plug gods got angry and made them come apart.
i also had a intercooler but tune nor after market parts where the cause and i had the logs showing it. including a scope showing voltage at the pump

+1, never thought such minor mods could cause ENGINE FAILURE. seriously re-thinking installing the Cobb TBE/AP i just ordered....

#15 ·
Rally car with a 34 mm restrictor - stock ECU ; connecting rod failure, 29 peak psi and over stressed bone stock engine . Several failed tune also i think played a big role here LOL

Moral of the story if you want to play hard you need at least the stronger connecting rod set :)

stock motor built for more power

First built motor erl 2.3 piston skirt issues originally believed to be a design issue and replaced by erl no cost.

Second built motor: sleeve failure from to much power? lean condition in #4? to much timing? who the frick knows what happened

I know I wached afr like a hawk and think both the first and second build issues may have been from trying to push everything to hard.I was right on the ragged edge of injector and feel we were close on timing but based on all the logging we did we were not at mbt but might have been closer than we thought. Much cooler air temps may have pushed the fueling over the top. my afr was at 12.5 12.6 a couple pulls before adjusting. I am guessing cylinder 4 may run quite a bit leaner. We will be running egt sensors for tuning the newest motor to try to verify what is hapening in #4. Both motors were running e85 air fuels were tipically 12.0 and we ran as high as 7*/8* timing at peak torque and as high as 21* up top.

Things we will change now

Less boost 33/34 psi down to 28/29 to keep more in the turbo's effeciency

We will tune e85 from 12.0 down to minimum 11.5 range

Much bigger injectors to get idc down to a resonable level.

Timing will be very consevative and probably 5* off mbt we believe we were 1-2 degree's on the other motors

We will tune pump gas very rich and use it for most of our timing maps to verify knock with a fuel that will knock if there is a problem.

The number 1 change is my mind set on how much power i need.

2008 GSR

Stock Motor:
Ran it on stock turbo for 20k miles roughly, half of that on E85 making about 400/400.

Put FPred on, still on E85, mx1 cams, all bolt ons minus LICP and downpipe. roughly 500whp/460wtq at 33psi....rod went through block on freeway accelerating. edit: this setup lasted about 5k miles.

1st built motor: lasted ~3k miles
Built 2.0L, AMS JE pistons, Manley TT rods, Cosworth bearings etc on new OEM shortblock.

FPblack, GSC s2 cams, MAP long runner header etc at 38psi.
Spun rod bearing number 4.

Thoughts on built motor, probably too much peak torque timing, running a bit lean and the number 4 one was prolly running leaner yet. I didn't log/monitor anything really...partially my fault for sure.

New motor, MAP EF4, ERL 2.2L, 10:1 CR pistons...still kicking for now with 1000 miles :)

The lesson to take away to those that are now scared, is MAINTENANCE and LOGGING. PAY ATTENTION to your car, listen to her, change her diaper, keep a nearly obsessive eye on every little gauge that you can and LOG IT. If there is ANY issue, do something about it.

2010 GSR

Full boltons, stock block, pro tune @ 340hp 360tq

Failure Root Cause: Not sure. Found #2 & #4 spark plug ceramic broken and slipped over electrode causing misfire in both cylinders. Melted #4 piston.
