Vortex Generators

I know that in aviation they are used to delay flow seperation during takeoffs and landings, but what would they be used for in the automobile department? I'm assuming it would allow for less drag, but I'm not entirely sure how this would work. Does anyone have a clear explanation?

The video explained it well enough. So it does reduce drag, so I'm assuming it also reduces cabin noise?

Actually neither. Cabin noise should not be affected and the drag that they reduce by keeping the boundary layer attached is negated by the drag that they produce by being in the laminar stream. Likewise, if they are made to be too tall (higher then the boundary layer) then the drag will increase further.
