I believe the real purpose of these is to improve the airflow over the spoiler to increase the effectiveness of the spoiler.

Correct. The VG reduces turbulence in the area over the trunk and brings down a stable airflow past the wing to increase downforce. But it has the added benefit of reducing your drag coefficient a bit. And if you can add the benefit of a better drag coefficient, then why not. 1.6% may not seem like much and you may not see a difference in daily driving but I guarantee it will help. Plus I believe that the faster you go ,the more significant will be the change... Of course we all drive so slowly in our pathetically underpowered Evos....

Even without the wing it could improve the cD of the car...

And Actually I've seen old B&W films of car companies testing the aerodynamics of their cars using those little tufts of yarn, so it didn't seem strange to me. Although, I admit it would be strange looking to someone who didn't know. Sort of like "Hair club for cars" or something.

Well, off topic but when I rainX the windshield and it rains my wife usually blurts out "Oh, look at all the little sperm!" And no I am not kidding about this. My wife's sense of humor is almost as disturbing as mine.
