Talking Dipping the GT-R.....Part 3 - Full Dip Prepping

I've been interested in Plasti Dipping my car for a while but after seeing "The Racing Channels" GT-R getting done by Dipyourcar.com I decided to give it a try myself. Now I've painted my own cars/trucks before, but never used Plasti Dip per say, so I wanted to start out small and see how things go from there. I order the full Pro Kit with sprayer, respirator, and gallons of paint (couple different colors/matte white/matte black) with plans of doing the entire car if all goes well, but until my order arrives I decided to give the old rattle cans a try and get used to the product. For Part 1 of this thread I'll be doing my Wheels, Emblems, Fender Vents, and the Door handles.

So the first part I decided to try was my Vossen CV7 wheels. I cleaned the wheels off the car with Dawn soap, dried them in the sun and then gave them a final spray down with 70% alcohol to ensure they were 100% clean and free of grease/brake dust. You don't need to tape the wheels up at all, just give the first coat a nice dusting and wait 10 minutes and give it another coat. Do this until you have 5 good even coats on. Once it's fully dry I like to take it outside and leave it in the sun for a couple hours for everything to cure up some more.

After that you can bring the car back in and begin to peel off the excess from the actual tires. Just use your finger to roll up an edge and slowly peel it off like a sticker. Really cool how it just comes off really easy, yet can take a beating at the same time. It's definitely something you have to use first hand to fully appreciate how durable this product actually is. And for any of the over spray on the tires just take a micro fiber cloth and rub it around the tire and you'll be good to go. I ended up using 5 cans which might sound like allot, but keep in mind I also did the backs, and the rather larger inner barrels of the wheels. And of course they are 20x10.5 wheels so that doesn't help much either....

Wheels Before:

After:

Since everything went so well with the wheels I decided to use up the rest of the can on the Emblems, Fender Vents, and the Door handles. Just like before with the wheels I cleaned the car down good with Dawn soap and then sprayed it down with 70% alcohol. Make sure everything is taped up good and you're good to go. And again, just like before with the first coat you just want a good dusting....nothing to heavy. You'll need 5 good coats on, so don't go try and put it all on at once....it's just going to end up running and looking like crap. So, 5 coats later and everything was looking good. Unfortunately the light in my home garage sucks and it's 11:00 pm my time so I'll have to take the final pics in the morning when I get all the tape pulled. I decided not to rush it and let it cure up over night for good measure. Thanks for looking, and I'll post up more pics tomorrow.

^^ Looks great, much better then the oem silver on your gunmetal car.

Right, shit's def amazing. I'm not gonna lie, at first I felt a little ghetto plasti dipping a GT-R, but after using it and seeing it first hand I'm 100% sold. This stuff is really cool, super durable, and when you don't like it anymore you just peel it off.

I've heard the glossifier actually makes it a little harder and not so rubbery, what do you think?

Its still a little early to tell. You will notice that the dip will stay somewhat sticky for a few days. I didnt use as much as the gloss as I probably should have. They sent me 3 cans and I only used about 1 and 1/3. I was kinda confused how it worked but I started peeling it off my tire and its basically the same thing, just clear. I had black on my last car for 2 years, no chips, no scratches..nothing. You will also notice that the flat black will soon go...well..flat. If you ever need to make them rims shine, I used a little bit of tire shine and rubbed it in. Made them look glossy for about a week. I hope this glossifier keeps them somewhat shiny. We will see.

Only thing I hate about doing my wheels black is boy oh boy it really makes that wheel gap show...haha. Monster Truck anyone?

Woah woah back the crazy train up there cowboy...you callin' my headlights ghetto?

(just kidding)

Although I did LOL reading about you plastidipping a GT-R. It holds up to heat surprisingly well, and should never chip/peel on its own in the short term. If you wash it, yeah it might start to show, and the plastidip is thinnest at the edges of a piece, so it's easiest to start "rolling" it up there by accident, but it's so easy to re-do, and cheap, it's not even an issue.

What I love is it gives the piece a slight texture to it, and a nice sheen, not quite glossy on its own but not quite flat either...eggshell? lol

The wheels are very hard to clean after plastidipping! It's very porous and catches brake dust and holds it. I never was able to get all the brake dust off, even using different brushes and even a tooth brush on the tiny nooks. What I did do, since it's rubber coating basically, is spray on foaming tire cleaner/shine. That's the best result I got. You just spray it on, let it work for a little bit then wipe down with paper towels. Like I said they looked pretty good after that.

+1 to the tire cleaner...and they are very hard to clean. One funny thing about the PD is when its raining your wheels will be dry as shit..haha. Car is soaked and it looks like no water hits your wheels. Rubber ftw
