It's most likely due to material and craftsmanship. That isn't a big stress area. No welds or anything.

My guess is material flaws/internal stress with the addition of stress/weakening from high heat and cycling.

Unless it began to split deep inside at the weld, which pulled apart and put stress on the materials successively above it. It is a much more narrow piece of the area, so a lot less strength. If anything was to crack it would be right about there.

Also notice what looks like a bulge in the metal. It's possible the heat in this small surface area section was too great, and something bizarre happened to the material on the flange, which caused expansion at that small point which ended up causing the flange and material below it to crack.

Huh...interesting

Well yeah, due to material defect.

Material science is cool. I should've done that instead.

Ok, no I shouldn't've. I like my pay grade lol.

He says we're idiots for speculating.

Would need to see the crack itself to find the beginning and the propogation of the crack as well as if it was a brittle crack or not.

Tell him his face is a brittle crack.

Just kidding. It's fun to speculate.

That looks nice, but are my eyes deceiving me? Does it taper to 2.5" at the bottom there?
