The clear coat on the X is pretty thin from the factory. Don't over-polish it. I tend to do it once a year in the spring. The swirls will return unless you're super careful, and even then you still stand a good chance of them returning depending on when/how you drive your car, weather conditions, bla bla bla.
The 7424XP is a good beginner random orbital. With a few pads and the right compound you can get a relatively good job your first time, and improve each subsequent time. It's a great product. If I had to do it again I'd get a flex, as the handle seems easier to me, and I hear they're a little better, albeit 3x as expensive. If you get the PC, get the counterweight, especially if you get ~5.5" pads, or your arms will vibrate right off. It only costs like 5 bucks more. lol Another option is to have a professional detailer do it once, then put some sort of ceramic coating/protection on it. An example of this is Oakes and his CQuartz. It's not easy to prep and apply, so leave it to a pro. It'll give you maybe 2 years of really, really, really nice protection from swirls and other marks. Srs. Worth the $ every couple of years if you have it to spend.

Porter Cable 7424 XP worth it?
Unless you know what your doing do not get a rotary buffer. It is the fastest way to jack up your paint. Look for a dual action orbital buffer.
