Thumbs up Podium Finish for SSP in the Whelen USTTC at TWS

Official NARRA Press Release

Costas claims outright Whelen USTTC honors for the 'rednecks' as TV show contestant Rohrs and South Side Performance podiums in series debut.

The scales were definitely tipped in favor of the 'rednecks'. Amongst a sea of Vettes, Vipers, Camaros, Mustangs and Chevrolet powered Miatas, only a Porsche and a pair of Nissan GT-Rs dared take on the might of American muscle in rounds 1 and 2 of the 2013 Whelen US TimeTrial Championship at Texas World Speedway (Feb 15-17). All eyes were on the South Side Performance Nissan GT-R of Jeremy Rohrs, one of the contestants in the new R U Faster Than a Redneck TV series that premieres this Friday on SPEED, but it was Paul Costas and his Camaro who stole the show.

Saturday, Round 1

Competitors were met with cool morning conditions for the first run of the 2013 season, but it didn't stop self-proclaimed rednecks T.J. and Troy Messer (Troy's Transmissions Corvette Z06) from continuing their great form at Texas World Speedway. The 2012 lap record holders and TT-1 class winners went quickest out of the box with a 1:50.344. Mike Weathers (1:51.999) surprised many to produce the second quickest outright time. The Electrical Automation Controls Chevrolet Corvette Z06 driver had been loaned a small block LS3 by LG Motorsports while his usual engine is being rebuilt and even though his displacement was lacking his pace wasn't, to set the early benchmark in TT-2.

While Paul Costas- another with LG Motorsports power- and Jeff Bawden saved their equipment for warmer conditions, Ajay Gaala (Dodge Viper ACR) topped TT-U and the V8 powered Miata of John Roberts went fastest in TT-3.

With the mercury climbing, the times dropped. Costas (BinkinRacer.com Chevrolet Camaro) put in a 1:46.906 to move well ahead in the no-holds-barred Unlimited class, with Gaala (1:50.776) solidly in second from Bawden (Good Neighbor Support Services Viper SRT-10, 1:51.114). However Bawden had only just begun and took second place in the third run with a 1:49.064, much to the delight of car owner Harry De Leon.

Then laying down the outright fastest time of the day, Costas reset his own class lap record from 2012 to take the TT-U win with a 1:45.444 from Bawden and Gaala. The pace in TT-1 was also impressive. The Messers (1:45.970) were in a class of their own by the third run to secure the win from a pair of Vipers driven by Keith Prociuk (HP Tuners, 1:51.024) and Chris Robson (1:54.430). Spending the day learning Texas World Speedway, R U Faster Than a Redneck challenger Rohrs realized the 'rednecks' of the North American Road Racing Association's Whelen US TimeTrial Championship were tough competitors, commenting "This is undoubtedly the premiere time-attack series in the country. No one is just given a trophy here, you really earn it."

Knocking two seconds off his times during the day, Rohrs quickly won respect in the paddock by finishing on the podium in his series debut, but his 1:51.587 wasn't enough to claim the top spot. He was beaten by 2012 class champion Michael Perkins (Target Air Conditioning Corvette Z06, 1:50.478) and Mike Weathers, whose winning 1:48.056 lap set a new class record. The V8 powered Mazda Miata of John Roberts (1:55.095) took Saturday's win in TT-3 from Charlie Wall's Ford Mustang Shelby GT, giving 'redneck' Chevrolet LS power victories in every class.

Sunday, Round 2

While cool track temperatures again kept top contenders such as Costas (TT-U) and Bawden (TT-U) sidelined on Sunday, things were immediately heating up in TT-2. Four of the five fastest times were held by TT-2 cars in the morning run. Weathers lead the charge with a 1:49.254, only four tenths in front of Croninger's V8 Roadster Miata (1:49.655) and Perkins (1:49.685). Rohrs was also in the hunt with a 1:51.558.

Surprisingly the team that dominated 2012's competition, TJ and Troy Messer, could only manage fourth fastest overall in the morning. However, they were still fastest in TT-1 class. Macpherson's Nissan GT-R and Gaalla's Viper ACR were first to register at the top of the charts in TT-3 and TT-U. Costas (TT-U, 1:45.359) and the Messers (TT-1, 1:45.523) rectified the situation in run two. Back at the top of the timesheet with just tenths separating the two cars, both secured victory in their respective classes. It was yet another TT-U record for Costas, meaning he's set or reset the class record five times in the past three years at Texas World Speedway.

Impressively, Weathers (TT-2) was right there too. With a 1:45.903 he cemented the TT-2 class win from Perkins (1:48.581), who had leap-frogged Croninger (1:49.016) for second. The second run also saw Bawden (1:49.403) and Prociuk (1:49.419) move ahead of Gaala (1:53.168) and Robson (1:54.661) to take second place in TT-U and TT-1, while Roberts (1:54.538) overtook Macpherson (1:55.228) for the lead in TT-3. However with damage to a front rotor Roberts was forced to call it a day. While most of the field chose to sat out session three and four Rohrs still had something to prove, putting his GT-R on top of the timesheet in the third run over fellow GT-R driver Macpherson (TT-3). However, Rohrs's time of 1:51.668 was still a tenth shy of his morning run, and not enough for the final step of the TT-2 podium.

On the other hand, Macpherson's time of 1:54.450 was just enough to take the TT-3 class win away from Roberts (1:54.538), proving it is possible to beat the Whelen USTTC 'rednecks'. Even more impressive, Macpherson was running street tires. Cody Whitehead (Whitehead Motorsports Porsche GT3 RS, 1:57.032) completed the TT-3 podium. The American muscle, boosted imports and European exotics of the Whelen US TimeTrial Championship will next face-off April 12-14 at Road Atlanta (Braselton, Georgia) for rounds three and four. It will be the second event for the NARRA South Title, and include the US GT Championship, SRT Viper Cup, Radical Cup USA, and US Performance Driver Education program which allows anyone with a high-end road car to take to the track during a real race weekend.

Cards were def stacked against me for sure. Only rwd, broke a wheel on Fridays practice session, switched to Hoosiers which I've never ran on a GT-R before, and I've never been to this track lol. Broke a wheel stud off on Saturday.... And if that wasn't enough.....the damn bell housing was making so much racket it was causing a false knock count and my ECU thought it would be funny to run a 9.8 AFR's.... I was down an easy 50 whp.

WELL DONE SIR!! Congratulations. Real quick off topic, was the wheel stud a stock stud? I think I'm about to invest in some ARP studs for this exact reason...I think this comment is going to finalize my decision
