EVO better than RS/Type R? Limp mode

Guys,
I was at Grattan Raceway this summer and i noticed a focus RS going into limp mode due to a AWD overheating system. Some online research shows that both RS and type Rs go into limp mode under heavy track usage specially under high ambient temp conditions.
I could not find any info about STIs.
Anyway, my question is has anyone here experienced limp mode purely due to high ambient or heavy track usage. Like engine overheating, AWD system error or vehicle cutting power. Not issues like fuel starvation, which is a different failure mode.
I do understand that modified vehicles tend to have this failure mode more often due to higher heat generation/inadequate PT cooling.
