Current Telemetry/Video Overlay Options

I'd like to get some opinions on the current options available. At a minimum I'd like to have GPS, 2 axis accelerometer, and video overlay. Anything beyond that would be great also. I'm looking to spend $1000 or less. I saw some of the stuff from Vbox, but it's all pretty expensive. As another option I also have a Kindle Fire I could use as part of the system. One thing I'd like to avoid is a long and complicated process of trying to sync up telemetry data to a go pro video or something like that after the fact. Ideally I'd be able to check out the video between trackday sessions.

Anyway I guess I'm just trying to get an idea of what everybody uses before I go charging off throwing money at it. Thanks.

I have had good success with track addict. Its cheap as hell, and has the ability to use external camera and gps via bluetooth/wifi. All run from the app on your smart phone.

Galaxy S5

That was all with internal sensors on the S5 and a cheap bluetooth OBDII Scanner. Get a 10hz GPS and nice gopro and your set.

I've used Harry's lap timer (smart phone app) with an external 10hz GPS, had great results.

I did use the free version of Track Addict the last time and it worked pretty well. The GPS antenna and OBD2 reader would put me right around $50. If it works with the Kindle fire that might just be the ticket.

I know a lot of local racers use these cheaper solutions. If you are planning bigger and more frequent track days at circuits, i think it is worth the investment. But if its occasional and or autocross, android bases systems are just fine, and provide more than enough data.

It does look like it would work fine for my purposes. I have a habit of ruining phones so I use a cheap $40 android. I used it for a few sessions last track day kind of as an afterthought. It worked ok but not great. I think with the Kindle Fire it could be a lot better.

Here is my setup...
iPhone 6
Harry's Lap Timer App ($30)
Sony Action Cam ($200)
GoPoint OBDII connected via Bluetooth ($100)

https://youtu.be/Vd9gcS5hVyA

Very easy to load Sony video onto the iPhone. Harry's Lap Timer will automatically sync all the laps. Harry's connects with the Action Cam over wifi so it knows when to start recording.

I use the Action cam for the front camera and the iPhone camera as the rear-facing camera. Not sure why the rear facing camera didn't sync on the first lap of the video I posted, but you can see it added the rear camera on the 2nd lap.

It's really an amazing app and does all the work for you. No syncing or anything required by you. Just upload the video to the iPhone and Harry's does all the rest including the picture in picture automatically.

It's available for Android too.

It's definitely hard to beat that for the price. I was on the website for Harry's lap timer looking at the recommended sensors and I saw this one that is supposedly coming out this winter:

http://www.wiveltracker.com/

It's supposed to have a high quality GPS, accelerometers, gyros, etc. and work with the CAN bus also. The price isn't super cheap but it does consolidate all of your sensors. I'd like to see how it works when it comes out.
