you're complaining about 40 minutes....pfffftt!

Those of us in big cities are not much better off either. Its at-least 90 minutes for me to get to a shop that knows their heads from their asses.

Don't Settle!
Here is my little story as to why:

I saw a thread on a local forum for a dyno/tune day. It was $200 for a dyno tune which is cheap so I signed up. I had planned to get a tune by a different shop but this was cheap and no wait time so why not. I get my car tuned then find out that this particular shop is known for blowing stuff up. Great!
Then I order some brake lines, 3 port, downpipe and other stuff to install on the car that I wont attempt myself. With the 3 port I needed a retune and decided to go to another shop. I try the shop I originally wanted but they dont respond to my emails so I find a local guy that installs everything and uses a dyno to tune the car. He does everything and there are no issues but shortly after getting all the work done I find out he closed shop. Great!
Now I'm getting a little more into racing and decide to run a certain class in autocross which requires me to take the 3 port off and retune the car. I decide I cant just keep settling for random places and need to start building a relationship with a one stop well known shop. I decide to call and hound the guys at the original shop I always wanted to get my car tuned at. Finally get the appoitment and get the work done. Yay!
I bet if I went to this shop to begin with I would have already established a relationship and the third tune I needed would have been done for free or very cheap. If I spent all the money for 2 tunes and to install various parts at this one place all along the tuner would have been familiar with my car and only need to update a few tables as opposed to doing a complete tune on an unfamiliar car. He could have probably pulled up my last tune and done a quick update and email it to me for free.
My tid bit of advice is if you have a shop you trust but is hard to get a hold of, dont give up. Its worth it to call these guys every few days and wait to get the work done. As Hollywood says in Steps 2 and 3, Build a relationship and continue to use the same shop if you do find a good one.

I've got a few shops close by that people swear by, yet I still drive 3hrs to the shop I have a relationship with. I've been toying with the notion of having a local shop do my brakes, but this thread is just what I needed to make me take the three hour drive.

True, but you guys have more options and vendors that are local. I have one reputable shop and no AWD dynos. Omaha is just lame in general

I put a lot of stock in the shop atmosphere; Any place where the people working will go out of their way to talk to you about what options you have or recommend parts for you because of experience and not because of marketing and margins.

I'm not sure how much name dropping we're allowing here, but Touge Factory has been my shop of choice. They have accommodated my M-F, 9-5 work schedule by allowing my to loiter on their couch watching movies while they did my coilover install on a Saturday morning.

Tip for those searching for a new shop, make your appointments well in advanced. If you need to make special arrangements (late drop-offs, while-you-wait installs for those with a long drive), a shop is more likely to accommodate you if you give them time to prepare.

now to add to that if you have communicated to a shop what you want and what you expect, and have it captured in an email and they are somehow unprepared. Walk the fuck away! I can not stress this enough! As an example if you discuss getting your car tuned, and you have a 3 port boost solenoid and a accessport you want to use. Then they say "sure we do it all" and you show up with your gear ready to go only to be met with "we don't use 3 ports, you'll need to buy our mbc. Also the ap takes special software we don't have but we include open source with the price of your tune" just leave, don't fall into the bait and switch. If you paid a deposit on a credit card and they don't refund just turn it in as a fraudulent charge.
