A Standalone Sleeper Sport Sedan That Still Keeps Us Awake At Night

The always-bustling Audi stand at next month's Detroit Auto Show figures to be cluttered with a full range of eighth-generation A4 models, all of which arrive in the States sometime between June and July. The line's real marquee model is, of course, the RS4, but that Rennsport ingredient will not be seen on the stand in Cobo just yet. (So let's change that to almost full range, and some sources are saying that there will not even be an RS4 this go-round.) The sauciest A4 present will be this model, the new S4, considered by many - this reviewer included - to be the real gem of the range, especially in comparison to the seriously costly RS4.

It's best to call this the "latest" S4, because it is definitely not all-new. However, it does partake of the mid-cycle changes to the "B8" eighth-generation, some of which we recently addressed in a first drive of the A4 and A4 Allroad Quattro. For now, though, we really don't need big changes - we'll be happy if the S4 remains our lower-volume secret.Continue reading 2013 Audi S4

Not really sure why everyone is complaining about it looking bland and boring.

I'm a sucker for old school German cars, but I have to admit the newest offerings from Audi are a definite improvement from what they've been dishing out for the past decades in the S4 line.
I've also read lots of folks complaining about how much it looks like a standard A4 too. Duh.
Looking back at the history of the S4 you'll notice that they all looked pretty darn close to it's A4 counterpart and didn't really have much to go by to distinguish one from the other other than 2-3 exterior differences. That's how it's always been.

:yeahthat:

I've never really seen Audi as an "exciting" car brand. The majority of their vehicles, aside from the old Quattro, the TT, and the R8 have all been rather boring looking. I think this looks like a nice sleeper.

I like how the new Audi cars look........they kind of have a sexy woman look. I love sexy women. For anybody bashing the current S4, they have NOT driven it. Go sit in it and take it for a spin. Then go into a 335i and realize what a POS garbage car that is. The quality of materials, craftsmanship, power delivery, AWD.......just about EVERYTHING is better in the Audi.

Audi is still slow for their price tag, so not everything. :shades:

pffttt......slow is a relative term. The amount of oomph the S4 has is plenty for, dare I say, 99% of consumers. I am not saying its better on the track, Simply that it serves as a better DD for many reasons. And it sure as hell is a much better DD than the 3 series.

You must not have seen a million or so FSI 2.0 Audi motors burn liters of oil before a single oil change. What quality is that... its been going on since the first FSI motor in 08 or so. Audi is aware of the issue. They just tell owners to come and have the dealer ship fill it up again. That or do a ECU mode and turn down the power in the car and send people on their way. Better yet people have their new cars with barely a year on them have entire pistons and rings replaced to fix this issue.

I am sorry but there is barely anything quality about Audi, BMW, MB, etc... these days.

The big-line of MB has been no problem here, mom is on her second, no issues at all. BMW is a mess with how fast their cars go bad, audi is decent in most of their cars. Don;t forget about Porsche, all the 997 GT3RS models have had transmission issue and many needed whole new engine, within 1k-2k miles.

And I agree Kickass, for most people it's fast as hell, I'd take it over BMW for a DD any day, but I'd also take a MB over them for a DD any day.
But the "RS" line is a joke, a new imported rs5 couldn't run from my lightly modded evo. And that's not exactly a cheap car, but holy f*** it was gorgeous, all black....and watching the spoiler come up! AHH I still want one lol. :wackoff:

I completely agree. I've never owned an Audi before and think they are just a tad bit expensive compared to their competitors, but must admit they are great looking cars. Not big and flashy like some MBs and BMWs. Just nice and subtle styling just like all their cars over the years.
I mean, seriously, how can someone not think this looks good:

I am fully aware of the old and new FSI problems. I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. But the 3.0 T is whole different animal. These cars have been out since 2010 and as far as I know, they are relatively a lot better than the shitty turbos that go on the 335 which need replaced every 10K miles for many. Of course, I am only speaking in relative terms here.

I wouldn't mind owning a well-equipped A4 someday. They are very nice cars. Only problem is, well-equipped in Audi means "HOLY FUCK LOOK AT THE MSRP!!!"

You start adding options in an A4 and it sends you into an entirely different price bracket that you wouldn't normally be for that type of car class.
