Great write-up, but they're missing an important factor.

There's a reason why we went with the AEM filter as opposed to the K&N for a very important reason that will probably only rear its ugly head down the road.

I'm really suprised at the results, and who would have thought that the K&N oil actually could get through. I had a suspicion after ruining 6 Bosch 4 plugs in an old firebird after "recharging" my first K&N back in '01

I'm still debating whether to go with K&N or Apexi Cone filter. The problem with Apexi is I don't know which one I can go with. 3in = 76.2mm and i think 75mm should still fit i think. Anyone familiar with Apexi filters and know if i need a 75mm flange with it or I can just get the replacement filter? If it's the replacement filter I need, would OD 160 or 140 fit?

[p/n 500-A026] Universal Filter and 75mm Flange
[p/n 500-A022] ID 75 OD 160 Replacement Filter
[p/n 500-A024] ID 75 OD 140 Replacement Filter

No the thing that ruins the K&N filters is when people use the recharge kit and use it wrong. I have seen it time and time again, people use to much oil. They look at the filter and see the oil hasn't covered a spot and they add more, and then they add more and more. You honestly have to use VERY LITTLE oil to oil these filters. Give the filter a few minutes to rest and let the oil soak in and around, it WILL fill in the gaps in no time.

Well I wish they would test some drop ins...lotsa' of us are only going that far with intake. +It sure would be nice to have other choices besides Rally Art and Works...the 140$ miracles:mad:. Last time I checked most aftermarket drop ins were 1/2 that or less

+I knew that Blitz was a POS a long time ago + they are not cheep. Big con job there

Wait until you see it kill a few hotwire MAS... ;-)
This is actually untrue. If you go research this statement, you will find K&N did extensive testing on this theory and proved it to be false. Even over oiling the filter had no negative impact on the MAF sensor with air flows much higher then you would ever see in a car. I, like you, used to believe this, but after some careful investigation, found its not true at all.

I was about to pull the trigger on the HKS one when I found those reviews. I was about to buy the worst one for my car. Thank god :bowlol: I didn't.

That's odd as I had a VW hotwire get coded and not work with a K&N.

On top of this, *MANY* people using hotwire MAFS have had this issue *OFTEN*. Not only had them fail almost back to back before they realized the issue, but also had them fail, cleaned the oil off of the MAF and have it work again.

Check out VWVortex or any other VW board since these cars use the hotwire setups and have for some time. You'll find a ton of data on this.

If it were a case of "Well, a few people think this might have caused it" I'd be inclined to believe its a case of people blaming it on something random. There's enough independent data out there at this point to make me think otherwise though.

I have also seen people put the filter in right after a recharge. You have to let the filter sit overnight after oiling it. I have always used them in my F-Bodys and will continue to forever.

..yeah I'm not worried about the oil..even though it's tempting as hell not to soak all the apparent blank spots on the filter as your spraying it. Of course K&N is going to say the oil CAN'T EFFECT the maf and so on. That report is a bit biased since they wrote it.. but I actually believe there is some truth there.

Lesson is> just don't spray the shit out of the thing to begin with and make sure it's a nice light even coating. Do it at night and let it sit...then shake the living crap out of it in the morning

Thanks Web9 for saving me the trouble of finding that stuff ;)

This exact topic comes up often on pretty much every car forum, and is probably one of the biggest myths out there.
