Thought I would share my experience... Installed stock width blizzaks on my car to enjoy the chicago weather. I have experienced 2 real good snow days and the tires are great on snow. I will admit though that I believe the stock width is too wide for blizzaks. Any non-pavement traction tire you worry about the balance between float and bite, and I believe the 245's float too much. When I had my GVR4 way back, it had blizzaks in a 205 width, and that seemed about right for this weight car.

As a side note, the winter in Chicago has been remarkably tame this year, so I have been dealing with the other extreme of winter tires, namely driving in warm weather. I have encountered a couple of times at high enough speeds and high enough temperatures, you can begin to smell the tires melting. Anyone else experience this?
