BOV sound with SST?

17228 Views 34 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  ScottSpeed21
I've been looking at getting a turbosmart bov for the sole purpose of that splash sound it makes. Car is totally stock with no mods. But i have been told that technically I wont get that nice splash sound due to the sst never taking the load off and always have that continuous contact with the clutch and if I did it would be a minimal squeek and that the only way I can obtain that splash is to actually let off of the gas... Is this true? Can any MR owners chime in, much appreciated.

my buddy has an aem intake on his MR and you can hear the stock BPV when it shifts. not necessary to purchase a A/M bov when you are stock. save your money and throw it towards an intake if you want sound
If you want the sound get a open filter short ram intake (see AMS). The car makes the sound stock but you can't hear it with the stock box intake. I'd start with a intake before you buy a new DV.
Be careful about adding a vent-to-atmosphere BOV on the SST. It is much happier when it recirculates.

Personally, I have the synapse BOV with cobb turbo inlet + cosworth drop in and the only real sound I get is the "maracas" sound when letting of boost; granted I'm pushing 26 psi. (lol pardon for my newbness)

This Christmas I'm doing fuel system upgrades along with the AEM intake, we'll see how that goes

Depends on how you shift, the BOV opens when you let off the throttle. I've been doing part throttle lift offs when shifting for as long as I can remember... it isn't necessary, but I noticed smoother shifting/less surge when I was using the stock bov. Turned into a habit I guess since I still do it (unless I'm at or near WOT, I only let off with slower driving). If you keep your foot down when you shift, it won't make noise. And don't listen to that BS about running VTA, our car has a MAP sensor... Most people here can't seem to understand that.
I have a turbosmart dualport BOV thingy. May it be the best idk, is it better than stock.....probably not. Best bet if you do get it, keep it on full re-circ as it is "better" for our cars. And to help answer the question, it will makes the sounds you desire even on full re-circ...the stock one will make the sound too if change out your intake.

My suggestion - get a intake better bang for the buck since you don't make power from changing the BOV and really dont need to change it on stock turbo, do most most folks change it yes cuz we wanna be like them cool subie boys lol

I have the HKS SSQV 3 VTA, no problems here. The person I bought it from told me his car threw codes. If you let off the gas after building boost, you'll definitely hear the BOV.
i also have an HKS SSQV vented to atmosphere, and i love it.I love the clear whistle sound even at low boost levels!

Check your logs and you'll see that it does negatively affect your car. VTA is not a great idea.
i tried VTA my god! I went through gas fast for some reason and ugh it was just plain nasty lol. Course I wasnt tuned for it that does make some what of a difference but anywho...bye bye

Your in luck! this weekend i just installed my 50/50 TS dual port on my ww evo x MR... my car may not be happy its not full recirc, but im happy with it and thats all that matters.. it makes a really really loud wooshhh sound... not like the no noise stock BOV. It blows off very easily at 3500+ RPM by just letting off throttle. I didnt get to test the stock BOV with an intake, but i may later (my AEM comes intoday). however, if i can figure out how to uploud my video you can hear the sound of the BOV w/ stock everything else. Also, its runs perfect if not a touch smoother and I wanted a wooshh, and not a psshh. Hope this helps.

^ Ditto.

But the whistling got annoying and I removed the part that creates the whistle and love it now. lol SST here as well.
I'm running TS BOV and its loud as hell!! i didnt think they work on SST's??? cos your foot is always floored on shifts??

What values should I be looking at/monitoring?

Eyler, im running a TS BOV without tune, how bad is it? Ive definetly noticed im using more gas, and i know they make you run a bit more rich, but how bad is it exactly?

in NooB english would be nice LOL

You won't hear it between shifts, but you'll hear it if you let off the gas while in boost.

Essentially, at higher gears you're going to run much richer. In fourth and fifth gear with my SSQV3 vented, I was pegging my AFR gauge at 10 and it wasn't moving. There will be people claiming that the MAF and MAP sensor negate this, but logs show that's not true. Talk to some of the big tuners and they can explain it better. It has to do with unmetered air being let out of the system and the car not accounting for that.
Since when should a Evo owner be buying a aftermarket part for the vehicle for this sole purpose??

I know to each there own but I thought us Mitsubishi guys where diffrent then that... Use the money for something that will help the preformance of the car. Not something that will do nothing but attract teenage boys attention.
Cone filter and a elbow. Pm me Ill fill you in. Sound and performance.
