After installing my AMS UICP, hearing the awesome noise you get, and also after facing rejection from Mitsubishi regarding installing an intake (they said once your install an intake we're voiding your warranty into oblivion).

So now I'm stuck with 'safe' mods, I wanted to get a bit more noise out of my X, so I thought I'd go for drop in air filters.

To cut to the chase, my questions are, do these filters actually increase the car's noise significantly? Do they add a bit of HP as well?

I searched around the forums and noticed that Cosworth's filter is the best choice to go, and K&N and HKS are the worst because they're oiled and they will mess up you MAF.

I'm interested in getting the K&N one only cause I know that K&N products are noisy as hell (If the Cosworth produces just as much noise, I'll go for it anyway), what would you guys advice me to get?

Edit, according to this article, the Cosworth filer has a +10hp potential? Is this the case with all drop in filters? http://www.roadtrackrally.com.au/2011/09/cosworth-air-filters-do-they-work/

Drop ins barely produce any sound.. erm you sure that UICP is tight enough? when I got mine i thought wow!!! the turbo woosh noise... then I stopped and thought... hmm.. its just a tube there shouldnt be more noise ... and it was a leak ;)

In regards to warranty why dont you just do what most people do ... if you want sound get a intake which doesnt change MAF readings like a ETS intake and then if you need warranty work or need to take it into mitsu for service just return it to stock :)

IMO I would get a ETS intake / Tune by clipse and call it a day... if you need some warranty just return to stock... An evo is not a car for leaving stock... am sorry it just isnt.. its like it was made intentionally to make you mod it .. starting by the rich tune :)

If you want noise, get an exhaust. Buying any other part just for noise is a tad ricey.
Although that's not the kind of noise I'm looking for, I would actually buy an exhaust if only it didn't void my warranty :freak:

@dj_xmx, I know all evos were never meant to be stock, but that's a restriction that Mitsubishi holds against us, I can't really compromise the warranty and have to pay for expensive repairs in case something like the gearbox fails, I simply can't afford that. I'll promise you this though, in a year once my 60K Km warranty is over, i'm tuning the car just enough to blow my load all over those 911s! For now, for the well being of myself and my wallet, a drop in filter is gonna do me well lol

OP subscribes to Form>Function or Noise>Function
:freak:

But I do appreciate you not trying to rip the dealership or Mitsu off. Look someone thats actually pretty honest.

I'm pretty sure it's super super super tight! One of the couplers popped off when i tested the car after the first install, and after that, I tightened the crap out of all of them. Are you saying that an UICP is meant to make no noise at all? And if it does, it's leaking? :/

Am pretty sure there wasnt any noise maybe I just didnt pay attention when I did mine LOL let other chime in maybe i am wrong but I didnt hear a difference really... I didnt drive it much though... because i was waiting on tune ...

also dont worry a slight leak on ucip on stock tune isnt going to cause anything to blow up LOL :) wait till someone else comments :) but i dont think the uicp make much of a noise difference... now.. once you tune you can really hear that turbo Sucking air :D

I just took my ETS off yesterday and put the stock intake back in with my perrin drop in and man is it quiet compared to before. Don't really hear spool at all. But yea an intake takes about 30 mins to install and uninstall so if you ever need to go to the dealer its not really a pain in the ass to change. Plus I happen to have an ETS for sale in the classifieds ;)

At catback exhaust should not affect your warranty in any way... Also, dealerships cannot "VOID" warranties.

Most cases of issues with getting warranty work done are one of the following:
- dealer refuses to provide warranty repairs on modded cars, no matter if the issue at hand is related to mods (this would be up to the dealer). This is the most likely scenario where a dealer might claim that your warranty is "VOIDED", which is of course total BS
- dealer refuses to provide warranty repair asserting that the issue at hand is related to a mod on the car
- dealer seeks approval for big repairs from Mitsu corporate and get turned down because corporate asserts that issue is related to mods. This is probably the best kind of dealer to go to, since you should only have problems if there's a decent reason for corporate to believe that you broke the car.
- Owner uses the car for something other than DD and/or has lots of mods and already knows that the issue is probably related to what they've done to the car or how they use it and then get all uppity and act surprised when their repair gets turned down.

Bottom line, basic stuff like a filter, catback exhaust, or intercooler piping shouldn't cause any warranty headaches unless your dealership service dept is populated by a-holes. Even with bigger power mods, the warranty on the rest of the car is still good (think seats, airbags, electrical system, etc).
