i know a decent amount of people have went from the 8/9 to the X but i doubt many have gone from an x to an 8 or 9. This is a simple thread for anyone with questions about switching to an 8 or 9 which i hear from X owners from time to time that they wish they had an 8/9 or they are intrested in going back. ill say a few things about both of the cars i own/owned

Evo x- as it says in the sig, it was a built motor car with an fp black. the car was stupid fun and i miss it everyday and if i didnt have the bs problems i had with the shop or was at a better shop (like i am now) i would have kept it. the x is without a doubt under rated in the evo comunity but i will say it is a much better bolt on/ dd type car and not so much as a higher hp car.

evo 8- this car has also been built but with a t3 type turbo on it. the x without a doubt handles better but on the strip mod for mod the 8 cannot be beat. the after market is so much bigger with the car that you can literally set up the car how ever you want. the car has been tested over and over and what works and what doesnt work is a google search away. this car is the obvious drag car for many reasons besides weight. the car it self can handle power better but as far as the drivetrain handling it i am not so sure yet. supposedly, the trannys are good for the 500whp area which is slightly lower then where i am for now. with that said, my tcase has already popped after a few hard launches on the new setup. the only problem i had with the x was the rear diff literally exploding but that was with the use of the pre load lauch method which little did i know, the ebrake disengages the rear end and you can imagine what can happen when metal gears are slamming together over time. oh and the ssl interior on the 8 is without a doubt the "better" interior of the two cars

feel free to ask anything else about the two.

Snake Bite,
Nice write up…
You will probably not find many people like me actually... I have both, I have a 2010 GSR Evo X and a 2005 Evo 8.

Yes, I could not give up the Evo 8 and will keep it as long as I can (I rather sell the Evo X if I have too).
Yes, I like both but for different reasons. To me, at least, they are different cars.
The Evo 8 is raw, more direct, lighter on his feet (for obvious reasons) and overall a much more engaging car.
The Evo X is more polished, grown up, a much nicer DD but it does feel heavy.

The Evo X is my daily driver and my Evo 8 is my fun and weekend car… every time I get back to my Evo 8 I have the biggest smile, the moment I start the engine and put it in gear, it is like I am connected to the car, we become one J. I was hoping the Evo X is similar but it never got close.
They both have pros and cons, depending on your needs, and they are both still amazing cars when compared to all those boring offerings these days…
One thing I will not agree with you, to me the steering on the EVO 8 is the best in the world I think compared to those cars I have driven and owned, that includes (owned) several BMWs, Audis, Subaru’s, Mazda’s, Nissans and (not owned but drove on the track) 360 Modena, Maserati GT, Lambo Gallardo, Boss 302 and Porsches.

Others might think different, it comes down to personal preference…. For me EVO8/9 > Evo X any day.

as far as which looks better, its honestly a tough one. its like comparing the gen 2 gts to the srt 10 viper. the evo 8/9 is a timeless and classic look and i dont think will ever get old. i personally like the 8 front better as well. the x is very aggressive looking but i think the 8 is the more grown up and "better" looking car. theres so many aftermarket exterior pieces that you can make it look how ever you want.

steering feel is hard for me to compare because i had another car inbetween the 8 and x but the 8 has extremely light steering and for daily driving its too light and somewhat annoying. but on the back roads its perfect. on the highway i cant say the same though

Main difference for me is If I brake an 8 or 9 motor or drive drain I'd shrug it off. Braking an X is still expensive as hell.

Strongly disagree with this! Dont get me wrong, I love the way the 8/9 look but they DO look dated, they do look old to me, even my x looks dated to me sometimes :(

I feel like you're biased. Your X is near bone stock...

To each his own, you have your personal taste as do the rest of us. I will agree to disagree sir :p

What I'm really confused about is your opinion that the 8 is more grown-up compared to the X... huh???

Ive had an 8MR and Ive owned x2 evo 9s

Ive got a question though... what have you been smoking?

Don't get me wrong they are top cars...

But the 8s have one of the worst interiors ive ever seen. Nowadays they just look old, square and dated.

The gearboxes are crap!! As its a shortcut by Mitsi borrowing the 6spd from the outlander (serious HP 8's and 9's use the RS 5 spd)

I used to get pulled by cops on almost a daily basis when I had my 8 and have never once been pulled in my X in over 4 yrs as it obviously looks more grown up.

The only reason more after market parts are available for the 8 is that the 4g63 is ancient.

And they dont handle better than an X that is rubbish!! the X has a much stiffer chassis, its only slightly slower because its heavier than the older evos, thats because its much safer.

I will never go back to an older evo.

This!!! No offense but evo 8/9 owners make laugh most of the time on how biased they are. Those evos look good but look more dated than rx7s, they are not safe and no way they handle better than the x. Even then 2011+ are just as fast on the 1/4 mile even with the extra weight. And if they talk about a nice super sportive experience and complain about the X is not like you are driving a miata or something like that! You are still driving a fat square box that all evos are.

End rant haha

As someone that just lost his X, I have been in the process of saving to get a Evo I can treat as a garage queen/weekend track car (aka not my DD).

I LOVED my X, but found it would nickel and dime me the second I started into the Mod process. First it was my clutch, then CMC, then AWC Pump, tires, pads, rotors, etc.. and on goes the list. I fully expected these things being that this is a performance vehicle, but that was a bit overwhelming on top of house payment, student bills, car payment blah blah blah.

In comparison to the X how do you feel the 8/9's compare on a vehicle maintenance cost?

My 7 year old Evo 8 has less rattles then my 2 year old RA (same interior as Evo 10).

In my opinion, the 8/9 is better put together, with better materials. Example. I like that my 8 doesn't have a hard plastic dash and door panels like the 10 / RA does.

how much is the insurance?? I know evo x has more safety features.....
-the safety features make the X cheaper to insure.

Insurance is much cheaper on an Evo X than an Evo VIII/IX. I ran quotes on all of them back when I worked for an insurance company. I've had my current agent run lots of quotes too (through many different insurance companies).

Simply put, an '08 X costs less than an '06 IX or an '03 VIII.
In my personal case, I would pay $40/month more for a IX than my X.

Any hot rodded car is going to have these issues. The weak link will always come to the surface. An old EVO is going to be the same thing.
