Say what you want about compact Japanese sports sedans, but the fact is they represent the best bang for the buck in the marketplace today. And they've quickly developed a loyal following from a new generation of car enthusiasts who appreciate their style, performance and affordability. Two cars that have defined this segment, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STI, are poised to take their game to the next level, extending their rivalry. While details about the all-new versions of these machines remain sketchy, we've uncovered a bagful of information that'll give you a good idea of what to expect when they hit their respective dealerships in early 2008.

the STi is a great car, but it's obvious that the X is the superior machine here.

The only thing I like better about the STi is the fact that the motor is larger, and it will probably sound better.

+1 on the STI looking ugly....... Subaru is only becoming more and more disappointing

I use to be a huge STI fan, because I didn't like the way the older EVOs looked (except the VI which you can't get in the States unless shipped overseas....)

but now the Evo X looks a lot better and I would pick one over the new STI...... the only STI that I like now is the Legacy GT STI (also not available in the states :p)

Yeah. I just don't understand it. I love Subarus, but man, they're hideous. Every time I hear of them working on some new styling, I get all excited and think "finally, maybe they'll look good!". I'm always let down.

You could always do what Weenzor did and do a WRX swap into a ~99 chassis. Looks a hell of a lot better. He posted a pic up in the OT section recently.

True, but the Legacy doesn't perform as well as the Impreza. :-/

It doesn't have to perform as well, it just looks a lot sexier, haha

But yeah..... Subaru has disappointed me, whoever though the front end of the B9 Tribeca would look good on the WRX STI should have been shot....

I'll be going for an evo X in about 2010...by then I'll have my mazdaspped6 paid off, and keep that as well, it's always fun to have 2 performance cars ;)

each generation has lasted ~2 years (9 models since 1992 so not exact)

something i've wondered: when are we getting the X? japan and other countries have gotten models way before we get them in the US, will that hold true for the X or will we be on schedule with them?

From what I've read (I think it was mentioned in one of the news articles I linked here) the X was going to be released this fall in Japan, and early '08 here. Honestly, that's fine with me...let them find the flaws first. We'll have to get some Japanese X members to keep us informed!

the whole wrx and sti are just hideous. then again most new small cars are. the mitsu is the only one with a proportional trunk, isnt taller than it is wide and doesnt weigh a thousand pounds mroe than its predecessor. mitsu reallllllllllllly did this right, and thats saying alot after the new galant and the new eclipse.
