One of the greatest things about a community is the sharing of knowledge. A how to section would be ideal for this so we could all have a one stop shopping place to look up any step by step instructions for how to do things. I think it should be separated only by vehicle, and not by topic. That way all one needs to do is search for the specific topic they want in the How To section. We should have good rules for the titles, and the forum should be moderated so that no how to gets clogged up with useless posts / flaming etc. Basically, quickly review it, get feedback for a week, or something like that, then lock it down and move all conversations out. This way it keeps the write up easily printable etc.

Thoughts?

Well, I wouldn't allow standard users to post in the "how-to" section. I'd want it in an easy-to-read format that a moderator would be familiar with.

So for example, if the how-to was "how to change your oil", a user could post it in the 4b11t section. From there, the "how to" mod could copy it into the "how-to" section and reformat it where necessary.

We could do one "how-to" section for each car, or we can do a "how-to" subforum beneath each existing subforum to keep it more organized. In the case of the former, the "how-to" section would be viewable from the main forum index. In the case of the latter, it would only be viewable once you clicked on it's parent forum (for instance, the 4b11t how-tos would be visible only after you clicked on the 4b11t section).

A "how to" is a great idea, but don't make it too complicated. Definately worth it as people start modifying their x's and knowledge should be shared and organized.

I like your idea Kooldino. Users could just post a How To topic in any forum that the item related too. Then a mod would just copy the original post to the How To section, and leave the initial posting untouched. Easier to track that way. I think we should have a How To section for Evo X and one for Lancer. The X section would cover all Evo X models, until there comes a point where they dont fit.

A "How-to" section would be pretty kick ass.....learned a lot on my other car forum's "How-to" section.

I would pick per vehicle but if majority rules on per subforum, that would be ok!

i think a how to section per vehicle would be easier for other users like evo and lancer once there are more members.one thing that would be confusing for some if they cant tell whats being done or to what car.

A how-to section would be awesome, but I think it should be written and submitted to the head administrator first for approval. There are some REALLY BAD how-to's out there also and it would be best if approved for reading.

agreed. Or perhaps there should be a forum standard template that is filled in to ensure all the information is collected and posted in the prefered way.

A standard template would be tough due to the varying parts on the car. However, some sort of guideline would be needed. I definitely agree with some reviews. First, a review by the owning mod, and secondly by the peers. Peers would also be needed to determine whether or not something is useful or not.

^ agreed.

I don't think a 'How to add a vent air freshener' listing would be considered useful.

But maybe you could sell it to EvoM as it would be in-line with the plethora of other useless tidbits of information on there. =)

Things I'd look for in a how-to would be the following:

-estimated completion time
-tools required
-some kind of difficulty rating
-how many people recommended to complete the task
-steps with pictures

Also add:
- what sort of skill level you should be to do it ( unless this is related to the difficulty rating) (?)
- Approximate cost of how to.
