Gauges

One of my first mods is going to be a gauge cluster and I'm looking for one of the tri-gauges the runs along the edge near the driver window.

Basic question: What brands are good and what should I avoid with gauges? Thanks!

If you're referring to the A-pillar that runs along your windshield, you might want to re-consider since it looks like you are here in the US... In which in its case, it will have a side curtain airbag in the location you are speaking of.

The only place I can think of at the moment for any type of gauges would be right on top of your dash board, in the lower cubie under the HVAC controls, or on your steering wheel column....
Defi is one of the top brands in Japan, it has a peak hold, warning light, warning alarm, 3 mins of recording & replay.

The only mount that you should use is probably the tri-gauge mount that mounts on top of the dash.

You can see my Defi gauge here in my post.

Well it would only be a problem if the airbag deployed right? :p

Thanks for the link SiC!
I had Blitz gauges in my previous evo 2. Worked a treat. Defi looks good. I'm actually purchasing the catalogue MMC ones. Its all your taste really. I just want to keep my interior as factory looking as possible. Usually the big name brand ones are the safest. ( especially the race proven ones)
I think ill reuse the Zeitronix module that was in my 9. It reads boost, afr, egt, and lambda in a nice digital display.
the actual airbag isnt mounted in the a-pillar, its up top of the headliner.

Well, if this is true, then there is nothing to worry about. Thanks for the info!
Just think about it guys. why would Mitshu make it deloy off the a-pillar.
even if you dont have a gauge cluster there, the a-pillar plastic cover would hurt alot wont you think?
Dealer recommended to me not to mount gauges on the A Pillar.

I assume the plastic comes off with the airbags.. yes.. I think it would hurt :)

yep...especially when airbag travels close to 200mph when its deployed...
you dont want anything between you and the airbag...
The pillar does blow off but the way it is mounted it deploys down towards the top of the dash not at the driver or passenger, so it would be safe to assume that an aftermarket a-pillar would do the same. The top part has the bag not the bottom so common sense would dictate that the pressure on the top portion would cause it to fly straight down towards the dash not out towards the drivers seat. If that was the case I don't think the lancer would have passed saferty inspections.
then why would they have the panel bolted to the actual pillar? if the airbag were to cause the panel to move while it was bolted on, wouldnt it cause it to crack and possibly cause sharp plastic debris to fly all over inside the caR?
my cobalt had curtain airbags. there's a "side curtain airbag" sign on the a pillar but there's a boost gauge on the a pillar stock. i think we will be fine to mount gauges here. just my .02
