This is a pros and cons list for me and me alone to help me decide on a new car. 2012 are out for both cars and I would be purchasing in about 2 months. *I need you help on deciding. Options welcome, but pleas keep it clean.

2012 *STI hatch
Pros :
Hatch back love the look
functional/ practical for room
Shorter/ lighter car
Better interior materials and durability
Sounds better
6 speed manual

Cons:
Does not handle as well
Does not respond as well to true bolt on mods.
No sunroof

2012 Evo X MR
Pros:
Handles better
Responds better to bolt on mods
Twin clutch automatic fast has proven durable so far.
Sunroof
Like the front end Look

Cons:
Interior materials not as durable or nice
Does not have that sound of a boxer 2.5
Sedan with small trunk not very practical.
Heavier

Things to consider
Ringland failure on STI in about 1% big power you must replace with forged pistons 4k I understand

boost issues and tcu problem on the Evo twin clutch This is being worked on and there are mods around it

Tell me your thoughts on bolt on mods

Intake, turbo back exhaust, header, ecu flash ect. *what power would you be putting down on
STI and on the EVO
What one can reach and handle 350WHP easier?

Last issue can the STI be made to handle as good or better than the EVO with suspension mods?

This is not a debate for you it's for me. I need help deciding on a new car and you input is much appreciated.

Car use Daily driver I live in WA in the north west. My drive way is about 3/4 of a mile long on gravel. *Car will be driven in snow regularly in winter for boarding. And will have rack to put my Mt bike on. Rack come off when not in use. Would like the ability to hit the track now and then for fun only no competition. *

Modifications yes I'm not crazy, but would like around 350WHP give or take.

Totally disagree with you on the interior. Looked at a STI before I bought my evo, interior is boring and simple. But to each his own. Overall the evo will always out handle an STI. Modded evo will always outperform an STI. More options and more power can be retrieved from the evo. Unless your talking 06-07 STI those were nice

Sat in 2011/2012 STi (wagon and sedan) at the auto show a couple weeks ago. Their interiors have come along way since the last time I sat in a Subie about 5 years ago. It's a bit nicer than the Mitsubishi Lancer interior, imo.

I would get the MR to not have to deal with a stick-shift every day, but that's just me. I wouldn't get a slushbox automatic in a performance or sporty car, but I also wouldn't want to deal with a manual trans every day either. That's why DSG-style transmissions are so awesome. None of the slush, none of the manual work. Best of both worlds and the only option I'd consider in a performance-oriented car. And yes that tends to limit my choices a lot, to mostly German cars or the MR, since the GT-R is out of my budget.

I'll never understand the "interior" argument for the STi

seriously for 40k cars, both interiors are complete garbage. If anything, I think the Mitsu's has a better design. the Subaru just uses better materials, yet the dash/panels/buttons still look like a car from 2000-2005 to me. I can't tell I'm sitting in anything special

having 6speeds doesn't really make it any more MPG friendly, and I don't find an extra 1k rpm of sound is deal-breaking

STi's pretty much an emotional buy over the evo - either looks (for whatever reason) or if you really needed the space of a hatch. I don't see any scientific reason to get an STi over an Evo - but car purchases are mostly emotional anyway, so I still appreciate and respect any subie owner I meet

I would strongly suggest against a Mitsu if either comfort/DD or warranty are important to you. It sucks at those but is awesome at everything else against your other choice.

Don't let us make your decision, because chances are that you have posted on NASIOC with the same question. Make up your own mind and be happy. The last thing your friends wanna hear is that you bought a car because of forums.

Practicality is overrated. The first time you understeer that STi you WILL feel your heart sink.

Get the car you want, ingenuity will take car of any practicality issues you encounter.

Why not test drive both?

KickAss was saying that the DD/Comfort aren't good for him, but I've taken my car on 12+ hour trips and DD it and I'm fine. It's personal preference. Go to the dealers, drive them both, and make your decision.

^^ I test drove both before i bought my X .... To be frank , the Subie seemed like the more pussied down version of a performance car, the Evo was much more focused and did EVERYTHING much better than the Subie except for the fact that it was quieter in stock form. Now i run a motherfuckin' straight pipe from my turbo back and i make Subie drivers shit themselves when i fly by them on the track (true story - a subie driver literally shit in his pants when i flew by him - smelled like shit)

But ya, my opinion: grow some balls and buy the Evo if you have any decency left as a Man .... otherwise pucker up your buttcheeks cuz ur gonna feel like you got fucked in the ass after you buy the Subie

My .02 cents ;)

Let me start off by telling you that I owned and modded both cars. Currently I have an '08 MR and I absolutely LOVE it! I also previously owned an '08 STi (hatch).

Your pros and cons are spot on. The only pro/con you missed (which is a BIG one) is the seats. One word, RECARO. See my comments in bold.

2012 *STI hatch
Pros :
Hatch back love the look - As do I.
functional/ practical for room - Very functional! Fold the seats down and you got a ton of room for anything.
Shorter/ lighter car - Yes.
Better interior materials and durability - Interior materials are better, but the interior is bland.
Sounds better - Sound system? No. Boxer engine, YES!
6 speed manual - So is the MR (6 speed automated manual)

Cons:
Does not handle as well - Agreed, stock wise the STi is a bit soft.
Does not respond as well to true bolt on mods. - Not as well as the Evo.
No sunroof - Do you really need one? I never liked or needed a sunroof. What's the point? I prefer the shade and can roll the windows down for air.

2012 Evo X MR
Pros:
Handles better - Yes, the Evo feels a lot better and handles better out of the box.
Responds better to bolt on mods - You can add so much more power with simple bolt ons and a tune.
Twin clutch automatic fast has proven durable so far. This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest reason I love this car so much.
Sunroof - Don't need or want.
Like the front end Look - Evo looks very hot and aggresive.

Cons:
Interior materials not as durable or nice - I don't like all of the plastic used, but with the leather and suede Recaro seats, Rockford Fosgate system with Nav, leather wrapped and stiched steering wheel, great gauge cluster, magnesium shift paddles, aluminum shift knob and e-brake I enjoy the interior of the MR a LOT more.
Does not have that sound of a boxer 2.5 - Yeah, can't beat that boxer sound.
Sedan with small trunk not very practical. - Not as much cargo room as the STi but you have to decide if that's what you really need.
Heavier - A little heavier, but is 200 lbs going to be deal breaker?
Honestly, both cars are great and I love STi's and Evo's. There are a ton of comparisons of these cars made by individuals, magazines, etc. It's going to have to come down to what you really need and which appeals to you more.

Here is my opinion from my experience. The Evo is a better handling and performing car, but doesn't have the cargo space of the STi. If you want the better performing car then go with the Evo. If you really need that trunk/cargo space then get the STi. I'd rather sacrifice the cargo space and get the better handling/performing Evo.

I can tell you that the Evo will be fast out of the box. The TC-SST is amazing and lightning quick. All of my previous cars have be manuals (SRT-4, STi, RS4, Nismo 350z, and Evo IX). After owning the MR, I don't think I ever want to go back to a manual. The TC-SST is the best of both worlds. It's a dual clutch automated manual transmission. It's just like a manual trans but you don't have to worry about pressing in the clutch.

Edmunds Insideline has done a lot of comparisons and road tests of the MR and you can find some good reading there. Here is what they had to say about the TC-SST:

Comparisons between the TC-SST of the Evo and the dual-clutch in our long-term Nissan GT-R were common, as was the MR's propensity to come out on top.

Engineering Editor Jason Kavanagh listed the reasons why he favored the MR's design over the GT-R. He wrote, "One, click the paddles in quick succession to drop two (or three) gears, and the Evo 'remembers' to give you the second (or third) downshift. The GT-R ignores any additional paddle-clicks until it's done with the first gearchange you requested. Two, manual gearchanges in the Evo can be commanded via the paddles or the console selector. The GT-R's console selector has no manual gate at all. Three, from auto mode both the Evo and the GT-R will switch to manual mode simply by flicking a paddle. The difference is that this single paddle-flick in the Evo gives you a gearchange. In the GT-R it only gives you manual mode. To get the gearchange you were looking for in the first place, you have to hit the GT-R's paddle a second time."
On a final note, you can achieve 350whp on the Evo without having to spend as much as you would on the STi. Also, both cars can handle that power.

Good luck with your decision. I'm pretty sure you will be happy either way you go. As much as I liked my STi, the euphoria I get out of driving the MR, enjoying the cockpit, handling, and performance of the SST is too much for me to think of going back.

The AWD system on the Evo is much better than the strange system on the STI. It's like the difference between a Phd at Harvard and a GED in Alabama.

From this description of your needs, STi all the way! The STi has the integrated roof rack and lots of cargo room.
