Long story short, I charged a kid only 150 bones to tune his X. Everything went well and he has been enjoying it a lot. Another X came into town and saw me in a parking lot. I gave him the ol' pitch and he said he already got a tune from someone in Rexburg (there's only 3 Xs here counting mine).. Hmmm..
After some talk, I pulled the map off his car and guess what.. Yep. It was mine.

Granted, I didn't tell the kid I didn't want him to share it with anyone, but It just bothered me after the amount of time I put into some of those tables and then have someone give them away for free.

I haven't looked into what i'd need to do to lock someone's ECU map so only I can make the adjustments, but does anyone have an idea?
Or am I just sounding selfish?

Technically they paid for it. It's theirs but the rest is based on a honor system.

Kind of the gray area of tuning...

Exactly... opensource is exactly that... free to distribute as you see fit. However I would be a major dick if i passed my tune off onto another RA guy after Clipse had worked so hard on tweaking it.

Another item of note... because we often have different mods passing a tune off to another person who might not have the same mods as you could have major implications and may wreck their car.

Generally a tune is meant for that car only.

@Clipse :+1: especially on opensource.

Look at it this way, if the guy ever blows his engine because of mods not matching tunes, he would've deserved it. Karma is a bitch!

Most guys paid for their tunes and will not give them away for free... plus with the variants of cars and mods just because one tunes settings work great for that car they might produce massive knock on another car and serious changes need to be made.

Throwing tunes around the net is just asking for someone to slap it on their car and say they are tuned but in the long run it might produce some unwanted results.

I really think that most of the people that get them protect them.

Why should someone who spent $300,$400,$500 want to give that to some stranger for free? Makes no sense to me...

It would, if they were selling it!

You live, you learn. As others have said, open source doesn't have provisions for locking the maps. I'm sure going forward, you'll be asking folks to agree to not share the maps with anyone else, sort of like a non disclosure agreement. Do you think the kid knew that the tune was specific to his car and it probably isn't a good idea to share it with others who might then come after him if the tune blows up their motor?

The kid was 2 brain cells from being mentally challenged. He had the mental capacity to click "write" on EcuFlash on another X with a tactrix.. I bet he would have tried it even if it were the SST.

I put the stock tune back on the kids car and told him in a very elementary way that even if he did plan on buying the same bolt ons the other kid had, every vehicle is going to react differently. I'm sure he already went back and got his buddy to flash it on again though..

Thanks for the info though, I figured there wasn't a locking method, but thought I might as well have asked.

Hey tuners, have you ever experienced someone copying a map then blowing up their engine and then badmouthing the tuner? That seems like it would happen a lot. "Hey, I stole your tune and it blew my engine up, you suck."

Like Clipse said it's really an honour system.
But there's no way around privateers ripping off shops or each other, and visa versa.
Its kinda funny when your own works gets back to you though in roundabout ways. i can only imagine how many times some pro tuner's work gets passed off as someone else's.

Take it as a compliment. he liked your work enough to share it. it's all you can do :)

PS if these guys really are a bit slow , you could always make some subtle changes to romid etc.
not sure how difficult this is (I've never tried) but superficially it will stop him being able to read, and thus write, his rom , unless he knows what he's doing.
