How do I remove the OEM chrome mirror covers?

I am looking for a little help here, I just purchased my GSR X a couple of days ago and overall I am loving the car. I went into the dealer looking for a PB GSR with the SS package but the only one that was remotely close to that had the OEM chrome mirror covers. I am not a big fan of the chrome and I am looking to remove them. Will I be able to remove them and be left with a finished painted panel underneath? Or will I have to order a new set of skins for them. If there isn't a finished skin under them, I will probably take them to my bud's body shop and have then painted body color. I don't get the whole chrome cover thing, it must be Mitsu's way of protecting their paint if it is as bad as everyone says it is.

For some reason I'm under the impression that they're just stuck on with 2 sided tape. I'm pretty sure that the mirrors are color matched underneath. To remove them, warm then up with a heat gun (be careful if they're plastic they will melt) and peel them off.
Should've had the dealer take them off as part of the deal.

If that were the case, they'd need to cover the whole damn car. :D
No. It's just Mitsubishi trying to make the Evo look more "upscale" to customers because they think people are stupid.

I think I read somewhere that it's snapped on using small clips/tabs. You have to snap/pull it off the mirror.

Dont do it that way... you'll break it. From the inside you have to tilt the mirrors towards the center of the car and downwards then you will have just enough of a gap between the mirror and the mirror cap on the top left corner that will expose the clips and you can just push them in with a flat head

the only reason why i didnt remove mine right away was because it reminded me of my S4... S4's are awesome BTW

and yeah i asked them if they can just swap them out for colormatched ones but they said they'll have to charge me for labor.
^LOL. I'd say just give me five minutes and a flat head screwdriver.

they wont even let you do that... because its a "liability issue" i guess if youre working on your own car on thier lot and something happens to you they can get sued or some legal trouble
lol mkay 5 minutes, keys, and a flat head screwdriver lol

btw i hate pointless litigation.
I took my chrome mirror covers off about a month ago when I purchased the OEM color to match my car. Cost me $216.00 from the dealership :(

I'm not saying do this but I used a flat head screwdriver and popped it off from the bottom. You can scratch them a little bit so be careful.

There clamped on there pretty good. If I were you though I would just take it to the dealer you bought it from and have them do it for free. Good luck :)
Thanks for all the ideas! I think that I am going to pull off the chrome caps using the method SosoJeff detailed, then I am going to get them wrapped in a matte black wrap. This will be the most cost efficient and cleanest looking way to go.

I will take some pics when I take the caps off to document the procedure but that won't be for a while.

:yeahthat:
Plasti dip it is! I did it yesterday!

All you have to do is push the bottom of the mirror in and stick a flat head screwdriver over the top of the mirror and into the tabs that hold the covers and pull it the cover off.
ive "accidently" popped both mine off by backing up and hitting my garage lol.
